    Abstract: In 1955, John McCarthy coined the term, artificial intelligence (AI), for a proposed conference at Dartmouth College, the first scientific gathering devoted to the advancement of machines with human reasoning and learning capacities. This chapter traces the antecedents of Al through the early intellectual developments and commercial and military applications. Subsequently, the authors explore the use of Al in general education as well as within the specific context of the social studies. As computer technologies continue to evolve and programmers develop increasingly sophisticated software, the realization of Al shows great promise to transform the way we teach and learn.
