Abstract: Mit Artefakten verbinden wir konkrete Bedeutungen und Funktionen. Als Werkzeuge dienen sie unserem täglichen Handeln. Welche Folgen aber hat es, wenn sie ›unsachgemäß‹ gebraucht werden? Wie überhaupt unterscheiden sich ›sachgemäße‹ und ›unsachgemäße‹ Verwendungsweisen? Anhand von Fallstudien aus verschiedenen thematischen Kontexten und disziplinären Perspektiven nimmt der Band ein weites Spektrum von Praktiken in den Blick, die um die Frage der Zweckentfremdung kreisen. Gemeinsamer Ausgangspunkt ist jenes Spannungsverhältnis, das sich in der Redeweise von der Zweckentfremdung abzeichnet: Einerseits verbinden wir mit ihr Regelverletzungen und Normüberschreitungen. Andererseits ist es der ›unsachgemäße‹ Gebrauch, der am Beginn eines explorativen Umgangs mit Artefakten steht und neue Bedeutungen und Lesarten ermöglichen hilft. Ziel dieses Bandes ist es, das kreative und wissensstiftende Potenzial freizulegen, das sich mit solchen Gebrauchsweisen verbindet.

Abstract: We propose that any robots that collaborate with, look after, or help humans-in short, social robots-must have moral competence. But what does moral competence consist of? We offer a framework for moral competence that attempts to be comprehensive in capturing capacities that make humans morally competent and that therefore represent candidates for a morally competent robot. We posit that human moral competence consists of four broad components: (1) A system of norms and the language and concepts needed to communicate about these norms; (2) moral cognition and affect; (3) moral decision making and action; and (4) moral communication. We sketch what we know and don't know about these four elements of moral competence in humans and, for each component, ask how we could equip an artificial agent with these capacities.

Abstract: The robotics industry is growing rapidly, and to a large extent the development of this market sector is due to the area of social robotics – the production of robots that are designed to enter the space of human social interaction, both physically and semantically. Since social robots present a new type of social agent, they have been aptly classified as a disruptive technology, i.e. the sort of technology which affects the core of our current social practices and might lead to profound cultural and social change. Due to its disruptive and innovative potential, social robotics raises not only questions about utility, ethics, and legal aspects, but calls for “robo-philosophy” – the comprehensive philosophical reflection from the perspectives of all philosophical disciplines. This book presents the proceedings of the first conference in this new area, “Robo-Philosophy 2014 – Sociable Robots and the Future of Social Relations, held in Aarhus, Denmark, in August 2014. The short papers and abstracts collected here address questions of social robotics from the perspectives of philosophy of mind, social ontology, ethics, meta-ethics, political philosophy, aesthetics, intercultural philosophy, and metaphilosophy. Social robotics is still in its early stages, but it is precisely now that we need to reflect its possible cultural repercussions. This book is accessible to a wide readership and will be of interest to everyone involved in the development and use of social robotics applications, from social roboticists to policy makers.

Abstract: Das Subjekt gilt schon lange nicht mehr als Inbegriff der Innerlichkeit. Bereits Hegel griff gegen Kant auf die antike Überlieferung zurück, um zu zeigen, dass Subjektivität nicht einfach »da«, sondern Produkt eines komplexen Bildungsprozesses ist. Autoren wie Althusser, Foucault, Butler und Bourdieu haben diese Einsicht dann unter den Bedingungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wieder aufgenommen und weiter gedacht. Erst die empirischen Erkenntnisse der Ethnologie, Kulturwissenschaft, Erziehungswissenschaft, Ökonomie, Psychologie und Soziologie öffnen den Blick für die gesamte Bandbreite von Techniken der Subjektivierung: für Verfahren der Disziplinierung und Kontrolle, der Intelligenz- und Kompetenzprüfung, des Trainings und der Selbststeuerung.

Abstract: This paper presents a novel hand gesture system for intelligent human-computer interaction (HCI) and its applications in medical assistance, e.g. intelligent wheelchair control. The hand gesture vocabulary in the system consists of five key hand postures and three compound states, and its design strategy covers the minimal hand motions, distraction detection and user-friendly design. The experiment results show that the designed lexicon is intuitive, ergonomic, and easy to be remembered and performed. The system is tested in both of the indoor and outdoor environments and shows the robustness to lighting change and users' errors. The proposed intelligent HCI system can run in real-time and offers a natural and efficient interface for people with disability in their limbs to communicate with robots.

Abstract: "We have always been drawn to stories of people acting with valor and intrigued to know why and, more important, how they do so. As psychotherapists, we heard daily accounts of people rising to the occasion to overcome adversity and improve their lives. The strength they demonstrated sounded like, looked like, and felt like courage. We each went to the literature in the early 2000s to learn more about this strength, and we each made the same discovery: most researchers did not examine everyday courage in their work. While philosophers have speculated about courage for centuries, the assembled psychological research on courage easily fits into a briefcase. But this situation is changing. A small but growing body of scholarly work now demystifies the courage that all people possess and call on in time of need. The contributors to this volume play an important role in the developing science of courage. Their chapters answer three fundamental questions about any new area of inquiry: What is it? How does it come about? How can understanding it improve individual lives, organizations, and society? Abstract: Wie wird Kultur soziale Praxis?
