  • MacIntyre, Alasdair (1995): Der Verlust der Tugend. Zur moralischen Krise der Gegenwart. 1. Aufl..

  • Meier, A. J. (1995): Defining politeness: Universality in appropriateness. In: Language Sciences 17 (4), S. 345-356. DOI: 10.1016/0388-0001(95)00019-4

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/0388-0001(95)00019-4

Abstract: The definition of politeness and the claims for universals have shown considerable divergence and lack of clarity as they have received increased attention since Brown and Levinson's (1978, 1987) proposed framework. This paper re-examines relevant literature relating to politeness in an attempt to bring some order to the issue and argues for a view of politeness as appropriate behavior, which provides a basis for a broader claim for universals and reduces the danger of ethnocentricism.

Abstract: This paper reexamines Brown and Levinson's theory of politeness and its application in subsequent studies and raises serious questions regarding its value for empirical studies. An alternative view of politeness is offered, and in light of this, a new approach to the analysis of Repair Work, placed within a more comprehensive framework of social interaction, is outlined.

  • Mielke, Rosemarie; Mummendey, Hans D. (1995): Wenn Normen zu sehr wirken - Ausländerfeindlichkeit, Bildungsgrad und soziale Erwünschtheit. Bielefelder Arbeiten zur Sozialpsychologie

Abstract: Untersucht werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Ausländerfeindlichkeit, Bildungsgrad und sozialer Erwünschtheit.

  • Otten, Sabine; Mummendey, Amelie; Wenzel, Michael (1995): Evaluation of aggressive interactions in interpersonal and intergroup contexts. In: Aggressive Behavior 21, S. 205-224

Abstract: Examined the impact of social context (interpersonal vs intergroup) on the evaluation of aggressive interactions. A total of 359 students participated in two studies based on A. M. Mummendey and coworkers' conceptualization of aggression as a specific kind of social interaction involving at least two persons, i.e., an actor and a recipient. Study 1 (151 males aged 12-16 years) examined whether perspective-specific divergence in judgments about aggressive interactions varied in interpersonal and intergroup contexts. It is shown that social context has an important impact on evaluation of aggressive interactions: less dissent is found between actors and recipients in the intergroup condition. Study 2 (115 males, 90 females, and 3 missing gender values aged 13-18 years) examined the context-specific evaluation further by presenting episodes of varying severity and by obtaining judgments on both actions and reactions. Regardless of the severity of the episodes presented, aggressive reactions were evaluated more negatively in the intergroup contexts. In conclusion, the importance of further research, qualitative as well as quantitative, on the topic of aggression in social contexts is discussed. zitert von 30

Abstract: This chapter challenges traditional models of deindividuation. These are based on the assumption that such factors as immersion in a group and anonymity lead to a loss of selfhood and hence of control over behaviour. We argue that such models depend upon an individualistic conception of the self, viewed as a unitary construct referring to that which makes individuals unique. This is rejected in favour of the idea that self can be defined at various different levels including the categorical self as well as the personal self. Hence a social identity model of deindividuation (SIDE) is outlined. Evidence is presented to show that deindividuation manipulations gain effect, firstly, through the ways in which they affect the salience of social identity (and hence conformity to categorical norms) and, secondly, through their effects upon strategic considerations relating to the expression of social identities. We conclude that the classic deindividuation paradigm of anonymity within a social group, far from leading to uncontrolled behaviour, maximizes the opportunity of group members to give full voice to their collective identities.

  • Sandelands, Lloyd E. (1995): The Idea of Social Life, S. 147-149

Abstract: This paper reclaims the idea that human society is a form of life, an idea once vibrant in the work of Toennies, Durkheim, Simmel, Le Bon, Kroeber, Freud, Bion, and Follett but moribund today. Despite current disparagements, this idea remains the only and best answer to our primary experience of society as vital feeling. The main obstacle to conceiving society as a life is linguistic; the logical form of life is incommensurate with the logical form of language. However, it is possible to extend our conceptual reach by appealing to alternative symbolisms more congenial to living form such as, and especially, art.

Abstract: We are concerned with the utility of social laws in a computational environment, laws which guarantee the successful coexistence of multiple programs and programmers. In this paper we are interested in the off-line design of social laws, where we as designers must decide ahead of time on useful social laws. In the first part of this paper we suggest the use of social laws in the domain of mobile robots, and prove analytic results about the usefulness of this approach in that setting, In the second part of this paper we present a general model of social law in a computational system, and investigate some of its properties. This includes a definition of the basic computational problem involved with the design of multi-agent systems, and an investigation of the automatic synthesis of useful social laws in the framework of a model which refers explicitly to social laws.

  • Smith, Barry; Woodruff Smith, David (Hg.) (1995): The Cambridge Companion to Husserl. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press

Abstract: The essays in this volume explore the full range of Husserl's work and reveal just how systematic his philosophy is. There are treatments of his most important contributions to phenomenology, intentionality and the philosophy of mind, epistemology, the philosophy of language, ontology, and mathematics. An underlying theme of the volume is a resistance to the idea, current in much intellectual history, of a radical break between 'modern' and 'postmodern' philosophy, with Husserl as the last of the great Cartesians. Husserl is seen in this volume as a philosopher constantly revising his system in order to be able to integrate philosophy with ideas emanating from science and culture. The so-called rift between analytic and 'continental' philosophy emerges as an artificial construct.

Abstract: In his attempt to resolve the enigma of knowledge, in Experience and Judgement Husserl undertakes the task of describing the transcendantal genesis of the predicative forms. These forms refer back to the structures of receptivity with its two dimensions, passive and active. The perceiver actively grasps and « details » the perceived object in its determining moments (parts or qualities : « spherical », « red » ...). Throughout sensible experience « types » and « typical structures » are constituted, which make possible the recognition of an objet under this or that category. On the way, not without crossing certain thresholds, going from the perceived « sense » to the linguistically expressed meaning, we try to show which place may be assigned to naming within the framework of an Husserlian phenomenology.

Abstract: This paper is the second part of a report on a comparative study of changes in twentieth-century American, Dutch, English and German etiquette books, focusing on connections between changes in ranking and formality, especially with regard to classes and sexes, and changes in emotion management. This part concentrates on the diminishing social and psychic distance between the sexes, and on changes in the demands on emotion management in the process of women's emancipation and social integration. A sketch of the expansion of upper- and middle-class women's sources of power and identity focuses on aspects such as the development of codes of behaviour for new situations: dances, dates, the workplace, etc., as women succeeded in getting rid of the system of chaperonage and in 'escaping' from the imprisonment of the 'home'. The concluding sections of this part focus on the intensified tug-of-war between old and new relational ideals and sources of power, and concomitant: feelings of ambivalence in both women and men.
