Abstract: Online question and answer (Q&A) sites are platforms allowing users to seek information or social support, which is sometimes socially uncomfortable. A major challenge in Q&A sites is how to encourage user contribution. Theory of linguistic politeness informs us that politeness is able to ease the tension resulting from face-threatening acts (FTA), and it is applicable to Q&A sites. However, Stack Overflow (SO), one of the most popular Q&A site for programmers, denies the use of linguistic politeness (e.g., greetings, salutations, and gratitude expressions), aiming at building a nonsocial platform. This paper focuses on a specific politeness strategy-expressing gratitude-in Q&A sites, and examines its effect on answerers' future contributions from the aspects of quality. Results indicate that gratitude expressions in comments can motivate answerers to generate higher quality content.

Abstract: Social robots have been providing a number of customer services lately. For example, they can take the place of people as receptionists. When people interact they predict each others decision-making from the others actions and take suitable actions for the sake of the other. However, taking such actions is difficult for modern social robots. Therefore, our initial aim is to solve the problem of how to predict decision-making in human-robot engagement. Choosing a reception system as a case study to approach this goal, we created a new model to predict who will use the system. The model contains a state transition function based on observation studies. We evaluated the model though a controlled experiment and a simulation experiment, using field data on prediction performance and mental effect. The experiment results lead us to believe that the model can predict the decisions of others sufficiently well. We also found that a pedestrian who will not talk with a robot receptionist suffers a negative emotion when the pedestrian is greeted by a robot, but a method we propose prevents this. We suggest that the word suitable is related to negative emotion, a part of usability. By using our model in the future we will attempt to find a method that will enable a robot to learn suitable actions by itself.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/TASE.2017.2748386 Abstract: Recent emergence of safe, lightweight, and flexible robots has opened a new realm for human-robot collaboration in manufacturing. Utilizing such robots with the new human-robot interaction (HRI) functionality to interact closely and effectively with a human co-worker, we propose a novel framework for integrating HRI factors (both physical and social interactions) into the robot motion controller for human-robot collaborative assembly tasks in a manufacturing hybrid cell. To meet human physical demands in such assembly tasks, an optimal control problem is formulated for physical HRI (pHRI)-based robot motion control to keep pace with human motion progress. We further augment social HRI (sHRI) into the framework by considering a computational model of the human worker's trust in his/her robot partner as well as robot facial expressions. The human worker's trust in robot is computed and used as a metric for path selection as well as a constraint in the optimal control problem. Robot facial expression is displayed for providing additional visual feedbacks to the human worker. We evaluate the proposed framework by designing a robotic experimental testbed and conducting a comprehensive study with a human-in-the-loop. Results of this paper show that compared to the manual adjustments of robot velocity, an autonomous controller based on pHRI, pHRI and sHRI with trust, or pHRI and sHRI with trust, and emotion result in 34%, 39%, and 44% decrease in human workload and 21%, 32%, and 60% increase in robot's usability, respectively. Compared to the manual framework, human trust in robot increases by 38% and 42%, respectively, in the latter two autonomous frameworks. Moreover, the overall efficiency in terms of assembly time remains the same.

(2014): Akzeptanz Smartphone-gestützter Rehabilitationsnachsorge bei depressiven Patienten. In: Verhaltenstherapie und Verhaltensmedizin 35 (4), S. 316-333
Abstract: Überprüft wird die Akzeptanz des smartphone-gestützten, kognitiv-behavioralen Reha-Nachsorgeprogramms eATROS für Patienten mit depressiven Störungen. 81 Patienten wurden zu einer Schulung in eATROS eingeladen. Sie erhielten danach und nach der poststationären Intervention einen Fragebogen, der sich an der UTAUT (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) von Venkatesh, Morris, Davis & Davis (2003) orientiert. 50 (62%) der eingeladenen Patienten nahmen die Nachsorge mit eATROS auf. Alle 50 schlossen die Behandlung ab. Wahrgenommene Nützlichkeit und Benutzerfreundlichkeit wurden vor und nach der Intervention als gut eingestuft. Besonders positiv eingeschätzt wurden die smartphone-unterstützten Features "Tagesstrukturierung" und "wöchentliches Selbstmonitoring" und "Möglichkeit zu SMS- und Telefonkontakt mit dem TeleCoach in der Klinik". Hinsichtlich seiner Akzeptanz erfüllt eATROS somit die Anforderungen an ein neues Medium zum therapeutischen Einsatz in der ambulanten Nachsorge.

Abstract: In HRI anthropomorphism has been considered to be a unidimensional construct. However, social psychological studies of the potentially reverse process to anthropomorphisation - known as dehumanization - indicate that there are two distinct senses of humanness with different consequences for people who are dehumanized by deprivation of some of the aspects of these dimensions. These attributes are crucial for perception of others as humans. Therefore, we hypothesized that the same attributes could be used to anthropomorphize a robot in HRI and only a two-dimensional measures would be suitable to distinguish between different forms of making a robot more humanlike. In a study where participants played a quiz based on the TV show “Jeopardy!” we manipulated a NAO robot's intelligence and emotionality. The results suggest that only emotionality, not intelligence, makes robots be perceived as more humanlike. Furthermore, we found some evidence that anthropomorphism is a multidimensional phenomenon.

Abstract: This paper evaluates the use of social head gaze and proxemic scaling in an affective robot for victim management using two large scale simulated Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) scenario studies.On average between four and ten hours pass from the time a victim is discovered to the time of extrication of the victims [2], [5]. During this time an urban search and rescue robot remains with the victim to monitor their condition and the environment. Throughout this critical period, it is important that the robot interacts with the victims in a socially appropriate way in order to reduce stress levels, keep the victims calm, at ease, positive, and engaged until assistance arrives while preventing a condition known as shock.

Abstract: To analyze the formula for success of human communication, we examined dialogs between human interactors who were asking for directions in public place and extracted those elements that are responsible for making a dialog succeed or fail. Then, we tried to rate the elements according to the grade of their influence. Based on this rating and on the Shannon & Weaver model of communication, we created a communication structure for successful human-robot communication on which further research may be based to make human-robot communication as effective as possible.

Abstract: This paper argues the significant contributions and also limits of usability approach on designing technological products and services. Among various emerging concepts that have been proposed to supplement usability, this paper argues importance of considering human affects when users interact with technology. This paper defines technology that are capable to evoke appropriate affective responses in users as affective technology. Perspectives of affective technology research are discussed.

Abstract: This paper presents a framework for multimodal human-robot interaction. The proposed framework is being implemented in a personal robot called Maggie, developed at RoboticsLab of the University Carlos III of Madrid for social interaction research. The control architecture of this personal robot is a hybrid control architecture called AD (automatic-deliberative) that incorporates an emotion control system (ECS). Maggie's main goal is to interact establish a peer-to-peer relationship with humans. To achieve this goal, a set of human-robot interaction skills are developed based on the proposed framework. The human-robot interaction skills imply tactile, visual, remote voice and sound modes. The multi-modal fusion and synchronization are also presented in this paper.

Abstract: Humans are inherently social creatures, and affect plays no small role in their social nature. We use our emotional expressions to communicate our internal state, our moods assist or hinder our interactions on a daily basis, we constantly form lasting attitudes towards others, and our personalities make us uniquely predisposed to perform certain tasks. In this paper, we present a framework under development that combines these four areas of affect to influence robotic behavior, and describe initial results of a longitudinal human-robot interaction study. The study was designed to inform the development of the framework in order to increase ease and pleasantness of human-robot interaction.

These digressions may be viewed as particularly pronounced forms of unsolicited interruptions as they contain information not directly related to the caller's intended activity. In human-human conversation, interruptions are considered to be speech acts which intrinsically threaten both the positive and negative face wants of the addressee and conversants adopt specific verbal strategies to mitigate the negative impact of their interruptions. A question therefore arises whether the introduction of face redressive expressions, based on human-human conversational strategies, into the design of system-initiated proposals in automated services can mitigate the negative impact of the interruptions. A usability experiment was conducted to examine the effectiveness of three contrasting politeness strategies for system-initiated digressions in a mass-market telephone banking dialogue using speech recognition technology. Participants (N= 111) experienced these proposals while using the automated service to perform banking tasks. Results indicated that all these system-initiated digressions-irrespective of politeness strategy employed-had a negative impact on the user attitudes towards the service. This paper reports these results and explores participants' perceptions of the politeness styles and registers employed in the system-initiated proposals.

Abstract: We submit that the most interesting and fruitful human-robot interaction (HRI) may be possible when the robot is able to interact with the human as a true team member, rather than a tool. However, the benefits of shared control can all too easily be overshadowed by challenges inherent to blending human and robot initiative. The most important requirements for peer-peer interaction are system trust and ability to predict system behavior. The human must be able to understand the reason for and effects of robot initiative. These requirements can only be met through careful application of human factors principles and usability testing to determine how users interact with the system. This paper discusses the recent human participant usability testing, which took our current implementation to task using a search and rescue scenario within a complex, real-world environment. The purpose of testing was to examine how human operators work with the robotic system at each level of autonomy, and how interaction with the robot should be structured to enable situation awareness and task completion. Analyses revealed that our architecture equally supported situation awareness and target detection by novices and experts, although experienced users were more likely to have more performance expectations of the interface. Results also had implications regarding the ability of participants to effectively utilize the collaborative workspace and, most importantly, their ability to understand and willingness to accept robot initiative.

Abstract: Call-centre based telephone banking has become widespread in the UK, with most high street banks and many building societies offering such services. Advances in small vocabulary connected speech recognition technology and the existence of robust DTMF recognition systems make a strong case for automating such telephone services. This case is reinforced by a financial aspect-the agent cost of human operators. Call centre costs could be drastically reduced if appropriate automated systems could be used in tandem with the more traditional methods of customer service. Any points of customer contact provide 'moments of truth' for a bank, where polite, efficient and effective service must be delivered. If automated services are to be used, it is vital that they achieve this, and that they do not tarnish a bank's image. The OVID project, funded under the EU's ESPRIT programme, aims to investigate the appropriateness of today's speech recognition technology to telephone banking applications. An experiment is described presenting two simulated telephone banking services, with identical dialogues, and differing only in mode of input-speech or DTMF. Subjects' performance with the systems is noted and their attitudes towards them are also objectively assessed via a usability questionnaire. The latter measure especially provides essential data on the acceptability of automated telephone banking services using these technologies.

Abstract: Moderne Technik wird immer leistungsfähiger, aber auch komplexer. Die Bedienung neuer Geräte bereitet häufig Probleme. Um hier Abhilfe zu schaffen, wird beispielhaft für den Bereich der Anthropotechnik ein interdisziplinärer Weg beschritten: Zur Lösung von Bedienproblemen werden Konzepte der kognitiven Psychologie herangezogen. Am Beispiel eines Endgeräts, mit dem verschiedene Dienste wie z. B. Bildfernsprechen, Fernsehen, Bildschirmtext abgerufen werden können (Mehrdienste-Endgerät), wird untersucht, welchen Einfluss die Schnittstellengestaltung auf die mentale Modellbildung und damit die Benutzerfreundlichkeit hat. Im Rahmen eines experimentellen Versuchsdesigns wurden unter anderem ein graphisches Bediensystem mit einem Bediendialog in der Art einer "direkten Manipulation" und ein Bedienkonzept nach dem Prinzip "generischer Funktionen" erprobt und im Hinblick auf ihre Benutzerfreundlichkeit verglichen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass gängige Gestaltungsempfehlungen im Bereich der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion zu revidieren und im Hinblick auf bestimmte Benutzermerkmale sowie den konkreten Anwendungsbereich zu spezifizieren sind. Während für den längerfristigen Gebrauch tastaturorientierte Bediensysteme vor allem unter praktischen Gesichtspunkten als benutzerfreundlicher zu beurteilen sind, zeigt das graphische Bediensystem für ungeübte Benutzer bestimmte Vorteile. Dabei profitieren besonders Benutzer mit einer geringen Visualisierungsfähigkeit von der Anschaulichkeit einer graphischen Darstellung. Benutzer, die als Visualisierer charakterisiert werden können, bevorzugen dagen eine sprachliche Form der Informationspräsentation.

Abstract: Die Bedeutung der Benutzerfreundlichkeit von Dialogsystemen und der Benutzerbeteiligung bei der Software-Entwicklung wird erörtert. Zunächst werden Konzepte und Kriterien der Benutzerfreundlichkeit beschrieben. Dann werden anhand illustrativer empirischer Daten die möglichen Effekte partizipativen versus expertokratischen Vorgehens bei der Entwicklung und Einführung von elektronischen Datenverarbeitungssystemen in Betrieben aufgezeigt, und Konsequenzen für die praktische Umsetzung solcher Vorhaben werden gezogen. Es wird dafür plädiert, im Rahmen der Software-Entwicklung zunehmend adaptierbare Systeme mit Individualisierungsmöglichkeiten anzustreben, die von den Benutzern selbst auf einfache Weise an ihre persönlichen Bedürfnisse angepasst werden können.

Abstract: Die Bedeutung der Benutzerfreundlichkeit interaktiver Systeme wird herausgestellt. Welche Kriterien dabei erfüllt sein müssen, wird erörtert, und Strategien zur Erhöhung der Benutzerfreundlichkeit werden diskutiert. Anhand der Beschreibung einer experimentellen Realisierung einer Benutzerführung für Bildschirmtext (Btx) wird schließlich exemplarisch der Beitrag aufgezeigt, den Psychologen bei der Lösung software-ergonomischer Problemstellungen leisten können.
