Abstract: Robots are slowly becoming a part of everyday life, being marketed for commercial applications such as telepresence, cleaning or entertainment. Thus, the ability to interact via natural language with non-expert users is becoming a key requirement. Even if user utterances can be efficiently recognized and transcribed by automatic speech recognition systems, several issues arise in translating them into suitable robotic actions and most of the existing solutions are strictly related to a specific scenario. In this paper, we present an approach to the design of natural language interfaces for human robot interaction, to translate spoken commands into computational structures that enable the robot to execute the intended request. The proposed solution is achieved by combining a general theory of language semantics, i.e. frame semantics, with state-of-the-art methods for robust spoken language understanding, based on structured learning algorithms. The adopted data driven paradigm allows the development of a fully functional natural language processing chain, that can be initialized by re-using available linguistic tools and resources. In addition, it can be also specialized by providing small sets of examples representative of a target newer domain. A systematic benchmarking resource, in terms of a rich and multi-layered spoken corpus has also been created and it has been used to evaluate the natural language processing chain. Our results show that our processing chain, trained with generic resources, provides a solid baseline for command understanding in a service robot domain. Moreover, when domain-dependent resources are provided to the system, the accuracy of the achieved interpretation always improves.

Abstract: This paper reports on an ongoing project between members of the computer science and special education departments of Bradley University and Murray State University, detailing the robotic platforms developed and investigated as a potential tool to improve social interactions among individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Development of a fourth generation robotic agent is described, which uses economically available robotic platforms (Lego NXT) as Socially Assistive Robotics (SAR), combined with direct instruction pedagogy and social scripts to support an alternative educational approach to teaching social behavior. Specifically, in this fourth generation, changes to the physical design of the robots were made to improve the maintainability, reliability, maneuverability, and aesthetics of the robots. The software architecture was designed for modularity, configurability, and reusability of the software.

Abstract: In a situation where a robot initiates conversation with a person, when is the appropriate timing and where is an appropriate position from which to say the first greeting word? In this study, we analyze human interaction and establish a model for a natural way of initiating conversation. The model mainly concerns the participation state [1] and spatial formation [2]. When a person is going to participate in a conversation, at a moment when a particular spatial formation occurs, she would feel that she is participating in the conversation; once she perceived her participation she would try to maintain particular spatial formations. There are theories in human communication for these concepts [1, 2], but they only cover the situation after people have started to talk. We build a model that precisely describes the constraints and expected behaviors for the phase of initiating conversation. The proposed model is implemented in a humanoid robot, and it is confirmed as effective in an evaluation experiment based on a shopkeeper scenario.

Abstract: There is an old English saying that "Manners maketh man." The original quotation is attributed to William of Wykeham and is a simple aphorism that acknowledges the tacit assumption that for human beings to live and thrive collectively, there must be a degree of formalization about their social intercourse. Although the bedrock of such mutual behavior would seem to be the law, our actual sharing of common assumptions goes much deeper. For we must all learn the social conventions first through the mediation of perception, the beginnings of language, and subsequently complex conventions and naming processes. These capabilities are assimilated at our parents' feet. They are the very stuff of maturation, and although the precise conventions are highly culturally bound, the learning process itself cuts across all human experience. Now, into our diverse human cultures come potentially intelligent machines. And in respect of their growth and maturation, we can ask two critical questions. First, to what degree do these nascent centers of intentionality and potential consciousness need to adhere to the principles of human social intercourse? Second, and equally as important, do these machine have a collective of their own which now bestrides all human cultures? If they do, to what degree do they act on us as agents of convergent human cultural evolution? In asking these questions we also have to face the logical antithesis to all human-centered technological approaches, viz, should machines necessarily be made to behave according to human-centered rules? Is this their best mode of organization? Although the latter query might be antithetical heresy to those imbued with the spirit of human factors, it is a proposition we should always be obliged to consider. Overall, this a rather daunting set of issues to face, and so let us decompose the challenges they present so that we can consider them in their various component parts.

Abstract: Immer mehr intelligente Haushaltsgeräte kommen auf den Markt, das Leben wird digital. Doch welche neuen Technologien begrüßen Menschen, welche lehnen sie ab? Und wie müssen diese Technologien aus Nutzersicht gestaltet sein, um akzeptiert zu werden? Das Buch widmet sich der Akzeptanz von zukünftigen intelligenten Haushaltstechnologien. Das Ziel der Studie ist es, die Frage zu klären, ob zukünftige sog. Ubiquitous Computing Anwendungen akzeptiert werden, welche psychologischen Faktoren dabei eine Rolle spielen, und wie man ihre Akzeptanz verbessern kann. Hierzu wurde ein Technologieakzeptanzmodell - ubiTAM - entwickelt und in drei empirischen Studien überprüft. In einer Onlinestudie wurde gezeigt, dass ein intelligenter Kühlschrank, ein Heimarbeitsplatz, sowie eine Geschwindigkeitsassistenz und Wartungsautomatik im Auto moderat positiv angenommen werden. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass der Automatisierungsgrad der Anwendung ihre Akzeptanz negativ beeinflusst: Je automatischer eine Anwendung funktioniert, desto weniger wird sie akzeptiert. In einer zweiten Studie wurde das ubiTAM-Modell auf den Kontext radiofrequenzidentifikationsbasierter (RFID) Dienste auf Produkten im Einzelhandel angewendet. Diese Dienste wurden negativer bewertet als die Systeme aus der ersten Studie. In einer dritten Studie wurde die Simulation eines intelligenten Kühlschranks getestet. Durch qualitative Interviews wurden zunächst Anforderungen an einen intelligenten Kühlschrank gesammelt und als Assistenzfunktionen in die Simulation integriert. Teilnehmer bewerteten vor allem Haltbarkeitsanzeigen und Gesundheitsinformationen positiv. Eine automatische Nachkauffunktion wurde nur dann positiv bewertet, wenn sie einen mittleren Automationsgrad aufwies. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass die Akzeptanz zukünftiger intelligenter Haushaltstechnologien durch emotionale Faktoren, die Kontrolle über das System, Risiken und Vertrauen in die Systeme mitbestimmt wird. Sie geht auf Konsequenzen für die Gestaltung dieser Systeme ein und zeigt Wege auf, wie man die Akzeptanz der Konsumenten für intelligente Haushaltstechnologien gewinnen kann. Das Buch reflektiert die gesamte Bandbreite der aktuellen Literatur zum Thema und integriert Forschungsarbeiten aus Psychologie, Informatik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Eine profunde Wahl experimenteller Forschungsdesigns, die Kombination aus Online- und laborbasierter Forschung und die Integration adäquater statistischer Analyseverfahren machen dieses Buch zu einem wichtigen Beitrag für die technologische Zukunftsforschung.
