Abstract: Many users of the Internet are aware of bots: automated programs that work behind the scenes to come up with search suggestions, check the weather, filter emails, or clean up Wikipedia entries. More recently, a new software robot has been making its presence felt in social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter – the socialbot. However, unlike other bots, socialbots are built to appear human. While a weatherbot will tell you if it's sunny and a spambot will incessantly peddle Viagra, socialbots will ask you questions, have conversations, like your posts, retweet you, and become your friend. All the while, if they're well-programmed, you won't know that you're tweeting and friending with a robot. Who benefits from the use of software robots? Who loses? Does a bot deserve rights? Who pulls the strings of these bots? Who has the right to know what about them? What does it mean to be intelligent? What does it mean to be a friend? Socialbots and Their Friends: Digital Media and the Automation of Sociality is one of the first academic collections to critically consider the socialbot and tackle these pressing questions.

Abstract: This chapter provides a synthesis of research on multimodal affect recognition and discusses methodological considerations and challenges arising from the design of a multimodal affect recognition system for naturalistic human-computer and human-robot interactions. Identified challenges include the collection and annotation of spontaneous affective expressions, the choice of appropriate methods for feature representation and selection in a multimodal context, and the need for context sensitivity and for classification schemes that take into account the dynamic nature of affect and the relationship between different modalities. Finally, two examples of multimodal affect recognition systems used in (soft) real-time naturalistic human-computer and human-robot interaction frameworks are presented. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/NICS.2015.7302187 Abstract: In recent years, novel technologies have been introduced to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research community. Research contexts and the range of studies have been widen. As technology progresses, new ethical issues are posed. This paper examined and reviewed ethical issues and concerns in recent HCI research. An overview of the existing codes of conduct was also provided, in order to get clear a comprehension on the existing concerns in research protocols. The review focused on top-twenty conference series and journals in HCI, published during 2010-June 2015. The purpose was to comprehend the latest ethical issues from the premier work in HCI research community. Altogether 13 categories of ethical concerns were identified. Some of them were consistent with the existing codes, while some of the issues were specific to HCI research. There were some identified issues that should be accentuated, as they currently were not in any of the existing codes.

Abstract: This paper deals with human-computer interaction applications that utilize emotional awareness. We will confine our discussion on speech-based applications. Prerequisites — training data, annotations — as well as state of the art in recognition and synthesis are addressed focusing on usability in possible applications and keeping restrictions in industrial environments in mind. We will present a taxonomy of applications using criteria such as online/offline, mirroring/non-mirroring, emotional/non-emotional and critical/noncritical system reactions. Based on a list of prototypical applications we check the consistency and usefulness of this taxonomy.

Abstract: This paper presents politeness as a key social requirement for computer human interaction (CHI). Politeness is defined, in information terms, as offering the locus of control of a social interaction to another party. Software that creates pop-up windows is not illegal, but is impolite, as it preempts user choice. It is proposed that impolite software drives users away, while polite software attracts them. Specifying politeness suggests four requirements: (1) Respect user choice (2) Disclose yourself (3) Offer useful choices (4) Remember past choices. Software that ignores these rules may fail not by logic error but by social error. "Mr. Clippy" is an example of software that users often disable because it is impolite. Operating systems could support application politeness by providing an application source registry and a general meta-choice console. A future is envisaged where software politeness is a critical software success requirement.
