Abstract: In this chapter, we provide contemporary theoretical and empirical information about the role of gender in the peer relations of children and adolescents. We begin by reviewing theoretical perspectives. These theories consider the development of sex-linked peer relationship processes and the impact of girls’ and boys’ peer relationships on their psychological adjustment. In regard to empirical research, research methods used to examine the role of gender in peer relationships are described. In addition, studies are reviewed that describe the nature of girls’ and boys’ peer relationships, including the tendency to segregate by sex and to engage in different activities. Finally, we consider the implications of girls’ and boys’ peer relationships, and their experiences in mixed-sex networks and friendships, on their emotional and behavioral adjustment. Abstract: Clear definitions of alienation and solidarity are needed as a step toward an explicit theory of social integration. The idea of alienation has played a key role in the development of sociology, but it's meaning has never been clear. Both theories and empirical studies confound relational-dispositional, cognitive-emotional and/or interpersonal-societal components. This essay proposes definitions that follow from the work of Erving Goffman and others. Goffman's idea of "co-presence'' implies a model of solidarity as mutual awareness to the point of merging consciousness. It appears that this concept of solidarity could be the main component of shared context, consensus, genuine love and social facts. Two empirical approaches are described, one with moment by moment analysis of dialogue, the other using sample surveys. With the use of mathematical notation, the survey method might be used to analyze social facts. The model could also form the basis for an explicit and testable theory of social integration.

(2002): Zwischen Anpassung und Widerstand. Jugendliche EinwanderInnen und ihr Umgang mit Fremdzuschreibungen und Diskriminierung. In: Forum Kritische Psychologie 44, S. 87-117
Abstract: Die Situation von jugendlichen Einwanderern befindet sich im Spannungsfeld von Ausgrenzung und Integration. Anhand ausgewahlter Ergebnisse einer empirischen Untersuchung wird gezeigt, wie Jugendliche mit diskriminierenden Lebensverhaltnissen und ethnisierenden Fremdzuschreibungen umgehen. Der Blick wird dabei besonders auf unauffallige und defensive Umgangsformen gerichtet - das Verschweigen oder Nichtthematisieren des eigenen Migrationshintergrunds und die Verharmlosung von gesellschaftlichen Ungleichheitsverhaltnissen und personlichen Ausgrenzungserfahrungen. Diese Umgangsformen fanden bisher weder im alltaglichen noch im sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskurs besondere Beachtung. An ihnen wird jedoch die Diskrepanz von individuellen Integrationsbemuhungen und gesellschaftlichen Integrationsvoraussetzungen besonders deutlich.
