DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s12369-017-0439-2 Abstract: This paper presents the methodology, setup and results of a study involving long-term cohabitation with a fully autonomous social robot. During the experiment, three people with different attachment styles (as defined by John Bowlby) spent ten days each with an EMYS type robot, which was installed in their own apartments. It was hypothesized that the attachment patterns represented by the test subjects influence the interaction. In order to provide engaging and non-schematic actions suitable for the experiment requirements, the existing robot control system was modified, which allowed EMYS to become an effective home assistant. Experiment data was gathered using the robot’s state logging utility (during the cohabitation period) and in-depth interviews (after the study). Based on the analyzed data, it was concluded that the satisfaction stemming from prolonged cohabitation and the assessment of robot’s operation depend on the user’s attachment style. Results lead to first robot’s behavior personalization guidelines for different user’s attachment patterns. The study confirmed readiness of a EMYS robot for satisfying, autonomous, and long-term cohabitation with users. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/S1007-0214(11)70001-3 Abstract: Cross-modal integration processes are essential for service robots to reliably perceive relevant parts of the partially known unstructured environment. We demonstrate how multimodal integration on different abstraction levels leads to reasonable behavior that would be difficult to achieve with unimodal approaches. Sensing and acting modalities are composed to multimodal robot skills via a fuzzy multisensor fusion approach. Single modalities constitute basic robot skills that can dynamically be composed to appropriate behavior by symbolic planning. Furthermore, multimodal integration is exploited to answer relevant queries about the partially known environment. All these approaches are successfully implemented and tested on our mobile service robot platform TASER.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10339-011-0401-4 Abstract: Emotions have long been seen as counteracting rational thought, but over the last decades, they have been viewed as adaptive processes to optimize human (but also animal) behaviour. In particular, positive affect appears to be a functional aspect of emotions closely related to that. We argue that positive affect as understood in Kuhl’s PSI model of the human cognitive architecture appears to have an interpretation in state-of-the-art hybrid robot control architectures, which might help tackle some open questions in the field.
