Abstract: Since the twentieth century, anthropologists have explored technologies. One can think of the breakthrough research of André Leroi-Gourhan in the 1940s combining pre-history, anthropology and technology, or the field of studies of Claude Lévi-Strauss of cooking techniques that led to the birth of structuralism. It is not a coincidence that many of the names of researchers which come to mind are French. By the early 1990s most of these studies were still unknown to the English-speaking audience. One of the first researchers in this area whose work was translated into English was Pierre Lemonnier. In 1992 the Museum of Anthropology at the University of Michigan published Lemonnier's Elements for an Anthropology of Technology. In the introduction to this special issue we will draw on his work and see what parallels, projections and/or protractions can be found that lead to the contributions that will follow.
