Abstract: The analysis of elicited questionnaire judgments and naturally occurring data on Japanese and English requests revealed an apparent contradiction between the perception of decontextualized hints (except for the very formal Japanese hint) as relatively impolite and the high frequency of actual use of hints in a university office setting. Further analysis of requestive hints using Weizman's (1989) categories showed that Japanese hints are generally more opaque than English hints. These findings suggest that Blum-Kulka's (1987) notion of politeness as a balance between pragmatic clarity and avoiding coerciveness is affected by contextual (i.e., standard vs, non-standard situations) and cultural variables. At the same time, the results also point to the need to determine how 'off-record' requestive hints may differ from 'on-record' hint-like request formulations (Brown and Levinson, 1987). In addition, the finding that the use of requestive hint formulations apparently serves to build solidarity in a standard situation in different ways in the two cultures suggests that the idea of simultaneously achieving less coerciveness and less distance by means of the same strategy should be further explored cross-culturally.

  • Rozin, Paul; Lowery, Laura; Imada, Sumio; Haidt, Jonathan (1999): The CAD triad hypothesis. A mapping between three moral emotions (contempt, anger, disgust) and three moral codes (community, autonomy, divinity). In: Journal of personality and social psychology 76 (4), S. 574-586. DOI: 10.1037/0022-3514.76.4.574

Abstract: It is proposed that 3 emotions-contempt, anger, and disgust-are typically elicited, across cultures, by violations of 3 moral codes proposed by R. A. Shweder and his colleagues (R. A. Shweder, N. C. Much, M. Mahapatra, & L. Park, 1997). The proposed alignment links anger to autonomy (individual rights violations), contempt to community (violation of communal codes, including hierarchy), and disgust to divinity (violations of purity-sanctity). This is the CAD triad hypothesis. Students in the United States and Japan were presented with descriptions of situations that involve 1 of the types of moral violations and asked to assign either an appropriate facial expression (from a set of 6) or an appropriate word (contempt, anger, disgust, or their translations). Results generally supported the CAD triad hypothesis. Results were further confirmed by analysis of facial expressions actually made by Americans to the descriptions of these situations.

  • Sifianou, Maria (1999): Politeness phenomena in England and Greece. A cross-cultural perspective. Oxford: Oxford University Press (Oxford linguistics)

Abstract: Politeness is crucial to successful communication and is consequently of great interest to those who study language in its social context. This book presents the first application of Brown and Levinson's ground-breaking theoretical work in a full-length comparative case study. Maria Sifianou draws her data from a variety of sources, including literature (particularly drama) questionnaires, and personal observation. She attempts to discover the principles underlying social interaction in both intracultural and intercultural contexts, and discusses the extent to which the concept of politeness is common to different cultures. She argues that politeness is conceptualized differently and thus manifested differently in the two societies under study: Greeks tend to use more 'positive' politeness devices than the English, who prefer more 'negative' devices. Positive politeness is more closely related to friendliness, negative politeness to formality. Dr Sifianou's analysis illustrates and supports the general claim that, despite popular stereotypes, there can be no objective verification for the view that one nation is more polite than another.

In: Zeitschrift für Sozialpsychologie 30, S. 40-56. Online verfügbar unter https://econtent.hogrefe.com/doi/full/10.1024//0044-3514.30.1.40

Abstract: In zwei Untersuchungen in Gießen (N = 68) und Dresden (N = 74) bei Mitarbeitern mittelständischer industrieller Betriebe wurde in unterschiedlichen sozialen Kontexten untersucht, welche Prädiktoren umweltbezogenes Verhalten bestimmen.

  • Tannen, Deborah (1999): Lass uns richtig streiten. Vom Wortgefecht zum Dialog. Original: The argument culture. Moving from debate to dialogue.. 1. Aufl..

Abstract: We value many things: friendships, careers, hobbies, character traits, and moral ideals. In at least some cases, we take ourselves to have reasons for valuing what we do. We believe, for example, that there are considerations that justify our devotion to teaching, or our admiration of a person with integrity. I might justify valuing one friendship rather than another because the one friend is sympathetic and fun, while the other is someone with whom I have very little in common. One philosopher might take her devotion to her career to be justified because she finds philosophy stimulating and fulfilling, while another may decide that she no longer has a reason to devote herself to philosophy because she has begun to find her research meaningless and boring. Most of us take the fact that Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his life to improving his community as a reason to admire him. But we do not take the fact that Bill Gates devotes his life to amassing wealth as a reason for admiration. It is intuitively plausible that there are some constraints on what reasons we can sensibly offer to justify these attitudes we have. It does not make sense, one might think, to admire someone’s greed or vanity. That a certain career is unfulfilling and tedious is a reason not to care about it. Not just any consideration counts as a reason that can justify the evaluative attitudes we have. But if there are such constraints on reasons for valuing, what are they? What standards are there for what we can rationally value?

Abstract: In the light of the work of Pierre Bourdieu, this paper begins by reviewing an argument that Western populations no longer recognise any fixed cultural hierarchy and that, instead, individuals seek knowledge of an increasingly wide variety of aesthetically equivalent cultural genres. Contrasting versions of this argument are isolated. Data concerning the frequency of use of different commercial sources of meals and the social characteristics of customers using different types of restaurant in England are examined. An attempt is made to infer the social and symbolic significance of variety of experience and, in particular, of familiarity with diverse ethnic cuisines. The findings are interpreted in terms of the complex role of consumption in personal assurance, communicative competence and social distinction. It is maintained that the pursuit of variety of consumer experience is a feature of particular social groups and that some specific component practices express social distinction.

  • Wouters, Cas (1999): Informalisierung. Norbert Elias’ Zivilisationstheorie und Zivilisationsprozesse im 20. Jahrhundert.

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1023/A:1008183129849

Abstract: Studied the complementary capabilities of humans and autonomous robots for the purpose of: (1) Developing a new approach for modeling, analyzing, and designing integrated human–robot systems; (2) matching human perception with robot sensory information; and (3) achieving a heterogenous function-based cooperation. The example of the system installed on a PUMA560 robot manipulator delegating structured tasks to a robot and unstructured tasks to a human showed advantages in the areas of obstacle avoidance and dual-arm manipulation. It is concluded that the integration of human and robot functions in a complementary and seamless manner can increase the strength, efficiency, and safety of robotic operations and reduce the mental and physical load of human operators. Abstract: Objective: The paper uses the timing of evacuation behavior of occupants of the World Trade Center at the time of the explosion of February 26, 1993, to test predictions from Emergent Norm Theory. Method: Tf uses ordinary least square multiple regression analysis to examine data from a survey done in the first week in May 1993 of 415 people who worked at the World Trade Center. Results: The theory's predictions regarding the additive effects of size of group and preexisting social relationships on the timing of evacuation are supported. However the findings document important and unexpected interaction effects of these two variables on the effects of perceived threat, resources, and cooperativeness on the timing of evacuation. Conclusion: The results augment the theory by showing the continued importance of enduring social relationships as determinants of collective behavior: Enduring social relationships are not only useful to differentiate collective behavior from institutionalized behavior but also specify the dynamics attending the occurrence of collective behavior.

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/5326.704557

Abstract: The challenges faced by people who are severely physically impaired and nonspeaking are demonstrated by the fact that, even with current technology, the word rates that they can achieve using current communication systems tend to range from two to ten words per min. We have been investigating ways in which prestored reusable texts might assist in improving the performance of such systems. Beginning with a study of the acceptability and effects of including prestored texts in a conversation, this investigation examined a series of methods of increasing complexity that had the system itself perform some of the cognitive and manipulative tasks required to locate suitable texts for a user to include in conversation. These methods have included logging conversational paths for potential reuse in future interactions, using a hypertext structure for storing and navigating through conversational texts, employing fuzzy information retrieval, and building a system based on scripts, plans, and goals. Seeing the possible conversation modes as occurring at varying levels of novelty, from predictable routines through reusable texts to uniquely created utterances, the most likely area for significant improvement then is in the storage and retrieval of large amounts of reusable text. Research needs to discover ways of making the retrieval process as effortless and efficient as possible to free the user to concentrate on the interaction itself.

Abstract: This paper provides an assessment of some fairness notions that are particularly relevant to economics of the marketplace. Motivations of fairness are also discussed. In this vein, three sources of fairness are outlined: moral precepts, stable convention, and reciprocity. Some suitable theoretical and empirical evidence are presented in support of these views. Economic models based on the view that man is purely selfish have performed poorly in some areas, particularly game theory and voluntary contributions to public goods. In other social sciences, notably in psychology, political science, and sociobiology researchers have also encountered systematic deviations from purely selfish behavior. There is ample evidence that both fairness and self-interest matter. It is hoped that this paper will provide a better comprehension of the tensions and complementarities between fairness and self-interest and improve our understanding of human behavior.

Abstract: This study provides a contrastive test of 3 immediacy-exchange theories: J. K. Burgoon's (1978) expectancy violations theory (EVT), J. M. Cappella and J. O. Greene's (1984) discrepancy-arousal theory (DAT), and P. A. Andersen's (1993) cognitive valence theory (CVT). EVT predicts that high immediacy, by rewarding communicators, leads to an orientation response and positive behavioral and affective outcomes. In contrast, DAT and CVT predict aversive arousal and compensatory responses in response to high immediacy increases. Findings from 48 opposite-sex friend dyads failed to find unequivocal support for a single theory. Targets showed a mix of reciprocal and compensatory responses in the higher immediacy condition, indicating that existing immediacy exchange theories should consider incorporating elements from all 3 theories and perhaps from dialectics theory to explain the complex reactions that occur in response to high immediacy changes from friends.
