    Abstract: Four experiments test the impact of power (vs powerlessness) on anchoring effects. Anchoring refers to the tendency to assimilate one's judgment to a previously considered numeric standard. Based on the notion that power facilitates the activation of and reliance on accessible information, it is hypothesized that power increases numeric anchoring effects on judgment, compared to powerlessness. Across studies, consistent support for this idea was found: when testing estimations of factual values (Experiments 1 and 2), subjective evaluations (Experiment 3), and negotiation behavior (Experiment 4). The findings of Studies 2 to 4 qualify the dominant idea in power literature that power reduces conformity to others' opinion. Power increases conformity to others' opinion, if such opinion is presented as an anchor and therefore processed more automatically. These findings also have important methodological implications for power research. They show that differences in stimulus presentation can steer observed effects of power in opposite directions.

    Abstract: When should service staff initiate interaction with a visitor? Neither simply-proactive (e.g. talk to everyone in a sight) nor passive (e.g. wait until being talked to) strategies are desired. This paper reports our modeling of polite approaching behavior. In a shopping mall, there are service staff members who politely approach visitors who need help. Our analysis revealed that staff members are sensitive to ‘intentions’ of nearby visitors. That is, when a visitor intends to talk to a staff member and starts to approach, the staff member also walks a few steps toward the visitors in advance to being talked. Further, even when not being approached, staff members exhibit ”availability” behavior in the case that a visitor’s intention seems uncertain. We modeled these behaviors that are adaptive to pedestrians’ intentions, occurred prior to initiation of conversation. The model was implemented into a robot and tested in a real shopping mall. The experiment confirmed that the proposed method is less intrusive to pedestrians, and that our robot successfully initiated interaction with pedestrians.

    Abstract: A social robot needs to attract the attention of a target human and shift it from his/her current focus to what is sought by the robot. The robot should recognize the current target’s attention level to smoothly perform this attention control. In this paper, we propose a vision-based system to detect the level of attention or willingness of the target person towards the robot and to control his/her attention. The system estimates the attention level from rich visual cues of human’s face and head. Then, by timing target’s attention to determine the appropriate attention level, it generates aware signals and makes eye contact with the target. Finally, the robot shifts the target’s attention to an intended direction. The experimental results reveal that the proposed system is effective in controlling the target’s attention.
