DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/AICAI.2019.8701332 Abstract: A significant threat social robots often faces is that their integration in real social, human environments will dehumanise some of the roles currently being played by the humans. This perception implicitly overestimates the social skills of the robots, which despite being continually upgraded, are still far from being able to dominate humans entirely. It also reflects loosely fears that robots may overcome humans in the near future and impact on the need to employ humans. This paper aims to address the role and relevance of user experience of socially interactive robots, separating several issues related to the evaluation of social human-robot interaction and then more specifically how this should be considered in developing countries where socially interactive robots are viewed with resistance and apprehension.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/IVSW.2018.8494900 Abstract: As digital systems get ever more complex, their behaviour may at times appear unfathomable. Users will only be prepared to accept this if they are convinced that the system does indeed work correctly. Thus, we argue the need for self-explaining systems: systems that are able to explain their behaviour, and the reasons for it. In this paper, we propose first steps towards a design methodology for such systems, and argue that beyond user acceptance, self-explanation also has other applications such as self-verification and reconfiguration. We propose a conceptual framework for self-explaining systems, discuss how to achieve completeness, and consider implementation aspects.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2014.05.014 Abstract: With the emerging application of social and psychological concepts to human–robot interaction, we investigated the effects of occupational roles (security vs. healthcare), gender (male vs. female), and personality (extrovert vs. introvert) on user acceptance of a social robot. In a laboratory experiment, a robot performed two different roles of a healthcare and security to address the potential usage of social robots at home. During the task, the robot manifested different genders and personalities via nonverbal cues. The results showed that participants (n=164) preferred the robot with matching gender-occupational role and personality-occupational role stereotypes. This finding implies that the gender and personality of social robots do not monotonically influence user responses; instead, they interact with corresponding role stereotypes to affect user acceptance of social robots. In addition, personality-occupational role stereotypes showed a stronger effect on users' responses than gender-occupational role stereotypes. The overall results lay a foundation for designers to reduce the wide design spaces of social robots by grouping the various parameters under the big umbrella of social role stereotypes.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.robot.2013.07.007 Abstract: In order to introduce social robots successfully, we must first understand the underlying reasons whereupon potential users accept these robots to reside within their own homes. An extensive literature review has been conducted and provides an overview of variables influencing the acceptance of social robots categorized by utilitarian variables, hedonic variables, user characteristics, social normative beliefs and control beliefs. In a user study, in which 60 participants interacted with a social robot, both the robot itself and the interaction experience the users had with the robot were evaluated. The results indicate that especially the variables of usefulness, adaptability, enjoyment, sociability, companionship and perceived behavioral control are important evaluating the user acceptance of social robots. Hence, the present study contributes to human–robot interaction research by designating the variables that lead to social robot acceptance. Subsequently, this study may serve as a onset in developing an integral model which takes into consideration the relevant determinants of social robot acceptance.

Abstract: Abstract This study is to examine the effect of robots’ language forms on people’s acceptance of robots. We applied a concept of social distance to measure people’s acceptance of robots. In an experiment, calling participants by name vs. not calling by name as well as the robot’s speech styles (familiar vs. honorific), were used to impose a verticality and horizontality of social relationships between participants and robots. After the conversation with a robot, participants rated the robot’s interpersonal traits and their comfortable approach distance to the robot, and their response to the robot during the experiment were analyzed. As a result, participants whom the robot called by their name perceived the robot as friendlier. They introduced themselves more actively, and were more intently focused on what the robot said. They asked the robot questions more frequently. Participants called by their names consequently approached the robot more closely than participants who were not called. An interaction effect was found between speech styles and whether names were used in regard to the perceived friendliness of robots, negative response to robots, and comfortable approach distance to robots. We discuss verbal interaction design for increasing people’s acceptance of robots.
