(1987): The dark side of politeness: a pragmatic analysis of non-cooperative communication. Canterbury: Canterbury UP
Abstract: I examine the Brown and Levinson (1978) model of politeness. On the assumption that a model of face attention must involve impolite as well as polite interactive behaviour, I construct an analogous model to deal with what I term Face Attack Acts. I show that an extension of a politeness model in this way reveals serious flaws in some hypotheses central to Brown and Levinson's work. I apply the principles of Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson 1986) to the extended model, and show how the theory can offer an explanatory account of face attention, on a continuum from polite to impolite. Relevance Theory makes predictions about the interpretation of utterances in context, which explain how the face-oriented aspect of interaction is recovered by hearers. I show that Relevance Theory provides a motivated way of linking utterances with facts about power asymmetries and group-membership which are seen to be recoverable by the interpretive process. I apply the resulting face-attention model of utterance interpretation to examples of the use of language to encode power and communicate assumptions about social behaviour and status. In terms of previous accounts of utterance interpretation, particularly Grice's Cooperative Principle and maxims, the account of face attention which incorporates Relevance Theory has greater explanatory power. In practical terms, this application of Relevance Theory is shown to be illuminating in raising the assumptions underlying non-cooperative communication to a conscious level, at which their validity can be sustained.

(1987): Sozialer Sinn.

(1987): Universals and cultural differences in the judgments of facial expressions of emotion. In: Journal of personality and social psychology 53 (4), S. 712-717
Abstract: We present here new evidence of cross-cultural agreement in the judgement of facial expression. Subjects in 10 cultures performed a more complex judgment task than has been used in previous cross-cultural studies. Instead of limiting the subjects to selecting only one emotion term for each expression, this task allowed them to indicate that multiple emotions were evident and the intensity of each emotion. Agreement was very high across cultures about which emotion was the most intense. The 10 cultures also agreed about the second most intense emotion signaled by an expression and about the relative intensity among expressions of the same emotion. However, cultural differences were found in judgments of the absolute level of emotional intensity.

(1987): Technology For Persons with Severe Disabilities. In: The Journal of Special Education 21 (3), S. 122-132. DOI: 10.1177/002246698702100310
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/002246698702100310 Abstract: Discusses issues related to the use of technology by the severely handicapped, including (a) obstacles to the use of technological advances; (b) strategies for the selection, design, and use of adaptations and technological devices; and (c) incorporation of technology into planning by teams of therapists, teachers, and parents. Consideration is given to ethical and philosophical issues that guide the application of new technological advances. It is noted that these advances have the potential to enhance opportunities for integration into the community, skills that lead to independence, and personal choice. Guidelines for instruction in the use of technology are presented. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

(1987): The nature of stereotypes. A comparison and integration of three theories. In: Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 52 (3), S. 536-546. DOI: 10.1037/0022-3514.52.3.536
Abstract: the present research we examined predictions derived from the following three theoretical approaches to stereotyping: complexity-extremity theory, assumed characteristics theory, and expectancy-violation theory. In order to assess these predictions, we manipulated the race, personal appearance, and dialect style of target job applicants. White judges rated these applicants of a set of characteristics relevant to hiring decisions. Results were consistent with all three theories. Specifically, the range of judges' evaluations of black applicants was larger than the range of their evaluations of white applicants; the effects of personal appearance and dialect style were larger that the effects of race; and black applicants, on average, received more favorable ratings than white applicants. We present a model integrating all three perspectives, and we demonstrate its usefulness for explaining our results and for understanding past research on stereotypes. (1987): Moralaneignung - sittlich reguliertes Verhalten.
Abstract: Theoretische Grundpositionen und Schwerpunkte des Forschungskollektivs Moralpsychologie an der Sektion Padagogik der Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin werden umrissen.

(1987): Human interaction with an “intelligent” machine. In: International Journal of Man-Machine Studies 27 (5-6), S. 479-525. DOI: 10.1016/S0020-7373(87)80012-3
Abstract: In this paper we report the results of a study of technicians diagnosing faults in electro-mechanical equipment with the aid of an expert system. Technicians varying in level of experience and interactive style (active or passive) diagnosed faults varying in level of difficulty. The results indicate that the standard approach to expert system design, in which the user is assigned the role of data gatherer for the machine, is inadequate. Problem solving was marked by novel situations outside the machine's conpetence, special conditions, underspecified instructions, and error recovery, all of which required substantial knowledge and active participation on the part of technicians. We argue that the design of intelligent systems should be based on the notion of a joint cognitive system architecture: computational technology should be used to aid the user in the process of solving his problem. The human's role is to achieve total system performance as a manager of knowledge resources that can vary in kind and amount of “intelligence” or power.
