(2010): The more humanlike, the better? How speech type and users’ cognitive style affect social responses to computers. In: Computers in Human Behavior 26 (4), S. 665-672. DOI: 10.1016/j.chb.2010.01.003
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2010.01.003 Abstract: The present experiment investigated if anthropomorphic interfaces facilitate people’s tendency to project social expectations onto computers and how such effects might vary depending on users’ cognitive style. In a 2 (synthetic vs. recorded speech)×2 (flattering vs. generic feedback)×2 (low vs. high rationality)×2 (low vs. high experientiality) experiment, participants played a trivia game with a computer. Use of recorded speech did not amplify the previously documented flattery effects (Fogg & Nass, 1997), challenging the notion that anthropomorphism will promote social responses to computers. Participants evaluated the human-voiced computer more positively and conformed more to its suggestions than the one using synthetic speech, but such effects were found only among less analytical or more intuition-driven individuals, suggesting dispositional differences in people’s susceptibility to anthropomorphic cues embedded in the interface.

(2010): The cost of a lack of decorum, integrity and transparency in service entrepreneurial contexts. In: SERVICE BUSINESS 4 (2), S. 167-176
Abstract: This article shows the results of a study whose objective is to identify aspects considered as explanatory variables, which evolve alongside levels of corruption and to analyse the direction of the variation with each explained variable, through the use of multiple regression methodology. Once these variables and the statistical significance of their variations have been identified the cost of, the lack of decorum, integrity and transparency, corruption is deduced. The variables are grouped into those where growth is associated with greater or lower levels of corruption, which will warn of the effect the services sector has on the GDP (GDP in%).

(2010): Kampf um Anerkennung. In: Psychotherapeut 55 (2), S. 106-112. DOI: 10.1007/s00278-010-0727-x
Abstract: Violence in partnership is seen as the expression of damaged self-love, discharging in form of narcissistic rage against the other. The disturbed basic emotion about the self as the root of the fight for acceptance in partnerships blurs the boundaries between the partners as independent individuals. The trigger for the acceptance theme in its narcissistic dimension may be jealousy unleashed by unfaithfulness. The wish to be accepted by others is a legitimate need but in its overreaching or denied form it may trigger a spiral of violence, which in its worst forms may lead to fights aimed at extermination. (2010) : People tracking with human motion predictions from social forces: 2010 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation: 2010 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation: Anchorage, Alaska, USA: IEEE, S. 464-469
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ROBOT.2010.5509779 Abstract: For many tasks in populated environments, robots need to keep track of current and future motion states of people. Most approaches to people tracking make weak assumptions on human motion such as constant velocity or acceleration. But even over a short period, human behavior is more complex and influenced by factors such as the intended goal, other people, objects in the environment, and social rules. This motivates the use of more sophisticated motion models for people tracking especially since humans frequently undergo lengthy occlusion events. In this paper, we consider computational models developed in the cognitive and social science communities that describe individual and collective pedestrian dynamics for tasks such as crowd behavior analysis. In particular, we integrate a model based on a social force concept into a multi-hypothesis target tracker. We show how the refined motion predictions translate into more informed probability distributions over hypotheses and finally into a more robust tracking behavior and better occlusion handling. In experiments in indoor and outdoor environments with data from a laser range finder, the social force model leads to more accurate tracking with up to two times fewer data association errors.

(2010): Adolescents' internet morality and deviant behavior online.. In: Acta Psychologica Sinica 42 (10), S. 988-997
Abstract: Nowadays, the Internet has become an indispensable part of people's lives. Internet morality and ethics are becoming more and more an area of concern. Adolescents have become the biggest Internet user groups in China. When adolescents use the Internet, they engage in various kinds of deviant behaviors which have been of concern by to many researchers. But how adolescents' morality influence their deviant behavior constitutes a hitherto unstudied issue. The relationship between deviant online behaviors by adolescents and their moral performance deserves much more attention. The present study investigates adolescents' morality on the Internet, their Internet deviance, and the relation between Internet moral cognition, moral emotion, moral intention, and deviant behavior online. 496 adolescents from three provincial middle schools were asked to complete an Adolescent Internet Morality Questionnaire, and a Scale of Adolescent Internet Deviance, which assessed their Internet moral performance and deviant behavior online. The results indicated that (1) adolescents' morality towards Internet was positive, and the correlation between moral cognition, emotion and intention was positive; adolescents considered there should be some moral standards as principles of behaviors for Internet users, they disliked immoral actions in Internet Society, and they had positive intention online; (2) adolescents' deviant behavior on the Internet was not serious. However, the frequency of inflammatory and pornographic behaviors in boys online was significantly higher than that in girls. As the adolescents grew older, there was a reduction in inflammatory behaviors, including hostility, aggression, conflict and irritability; (3) Internet moral intention and cognition could significantly and negatively predict adolescents' deviance on the Internet. However, Internet emotion could not predict their deviance online. The results show that the adolescents Internet morality can predict moral behavior online: if adolescents maintain a more positive morality, they will engage in less deviant behavior online. This study indicates that in order to reduce adolescents' deviant behavior on the Internet, we should pay more attention to their moral education and to characteristics of age and gender. (2010): Addressing non-acquaintances in Tunisian Arabic. A cognitive-pragmatic account. In: Intercultural Pragmatics 7 (1). DOI: 10.1515/iprg.2010.007
Abstract: The literature on terms of address (TofA) abounds in both sociolinguistics and pragmatics. Mostly, sociolinguistics explains them with rank and age (Trudgill 1983; Wardhaugh 1986; Fasold 1990; Holmes 1992; Romaine 1994) and pragmatics with politeness (Brown and Levinson 1987). Furthermore, TofA are mostly studied as occurring between acquaintances that know about the social rank and age of each other to produce the address that is most coherent with the context of situation. The present study focuses on TofA used in addressing non-acquaintances, i.e., people who have never met one another before. Evidence from Tunisian Arabic (TA) shows that TofA as used with non-acquaintances are not motivated by rank and politeness as much as by the addresser's drive to create familiarity and minimize distance with the addressee. Such a pragmatic minimization of distance is not noticed when TofA are used with acquaintances. Speakers of TA inject kinship-related terms in their address to non-acquaintances in view of creating rapprochement between the speaker as a deictic center and the addressee in the periphery Such a rapprochement is made possible through the manipulation by the speaker of the FAR-NEAR schema (Johnson 1987) related to the CENTER-PERIPHERY image schema. The paper intends to show this taming of addressees by studying TofA in TA through Lakoff's (1982, 1987) theory of categorization known as Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs).

(2010): Analytical Sociology and Its Critics. In: European Journal of Sociology 51 (1), S. 129-170. DOI: 10.1017/S0003975610000056
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1017/S0003975610000056 Abstract: In reaction to the criticisms to which analytical sociology has been subject with increasing frequency, the article attempts an overall assessment of this research program by addressing the following questions: where does contemporary analytical sociology come from? what are the differences between the “old” and “new” analytical sociology? what does analytical sociology really consist of? do the critics of analytical sociology have good reasons to be critical? Gross’s 2009 ASR article is deeply discussed in order to answer the last question.

(2010): Die interkulturelle Kompetenz im internationalen Human Resource Management. Eine konfirmatorische Evaluation. Zugl.: Regensburg, Univ., Diss., 2010. 1. Aufl.. Lohmar: Eul

(2010): The moral foundations of social institutions. A philosophical study. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press
Abstract: Theory -- A teleological account of institutions -- The moral foundations of institutions -- Individual autonomy : agency and structure -- Collective moral responsibility -- Institutional corruption -- Applications -- The professions -- Welfare institutions -- The university -- The police -- The business corporation -- Institutions and information and communication technology -- Government In this book, Seumas Miller examines the moral foundations of contemporary social institutions. Offering an original general theory of social institutions, he posits that all social institutions exist to realize various collective ends, indeed, to produce collective goods. He analyses key concepts such as collective responsibility and institutional corruption. Miller also provides distinctive special theories of particular institutions, including governments, welfare agencies, universities, police organizations, business corporations, and communications and information technology entities. These theories are philosophical and, thus, foundational and synoptic in character. They are normative accounts of a sampling of contemporary social institutions, not descriptive accounts of all social institutions, both past and present. Miller also addresses various ethical challenges confronting contemporary institutional designers and policymakers, including the renovation of the international financial system, the 'dumbing down' of the media, the challenge of world poverty, and human rights infringements by security agencies combating global terrorism

(2010): Assessment of residential satisfaction in newly designed public low-cost housing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In: Habitat International 34 (1), S. 18-27. DOI: 10.1016/j.habitatint.2009.04.002
Abstract: This paper provides an assessment of residential satisfaction of newly designed public low-cost housing dwellers of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with forty-five variables grouped into five components - dwelling unit features, dwelling unit support services, public facilities, social environment and neighbourhood facilities. Findings from the study indicate that the residents are moderately satisfied with dwelling unit support services, followed by public and neighbourhood facilities than dwelling unit features and social environment, which have higher percentage of respondents with low level of satisfaction. Residential satisfaction index has high positive correlations with dwelling unit features, social environment, support services and public facilities, and low positive correlation with neighbourhood facilities. Socio-economic attributes of the residents such as age, family size, working wives, previous residence are negatively correlated with residential satisfaction, whereas residents' race, employment type, floor level and length of residency are positively correlated with residential satisfaction, A Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model has been estimated for the study and the model provides 76% explanations to determine residential satisfaction with ten predictor variables. The high beta coefficients of the model suggest that residential satisfaction of public low-cost housing can be enhanced through improving the management of security control, perimeter roads, cleanliness of garbage house and garbage collection, by the Local authority (KLCH). Moderate beta coefficient values of the model suggest that improvement of housing design is necessary to enhance residents' satisfaction with the predictor variables such as dry area, bedroom-1, dinning space, socket points and bedroom-3. From socio-economic analysis, it was found that the size of existing low-cost unit does not satisfy the needs of 29.4% inhabitants with large (6+) families and high bedroom occupancy rates (2.5). Furthermore, the location of future low-cost housing estates should also consider their closeness to the shopping centres. Public agencies for low-cost housing should pay proper attention to the management of support and public facilities to enhance residential satisfaction of the inhabitants and also adopt a policy to build different sizes of units to cater the needs of residents with large families in order to enhance quality of life of the low-income urban community in the country.

(2010): Disgust selectively modulates reciprocal fairness in economic interactions. In: Emotion (Washington, D.C.) 10 (2), S. 169-180. DOI: 10.1037/a0017826
DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20364893 Abstract: We report two studies aimed at investigating the effects of distinct negative emotions on pairwise economic interactions. In the ultimatum game, a proposer offers a division of a sum of money to a responder who decides whether to accept the split, or reject and leave both players with nothing. In Experiment 1, we investigated whether induced disgust, as compared to sadness and neutral emotion, specifically influences responders' decisions to reject unfair proposals. In Experiment 2, we assessed whether the effects of disgust were selectively related to social contexts by contrasting interactions with a human partner with those involving a computer. Results showed that relative to being in a sad or neutral mood, induced feelings of disgust significantly increased rejection rates of unfair offers. Moreover, we found that when the partner was not responsible for the fairness violation, such as in the computer-offer condition, the disgust induction failed to affect participants' choices. We conclude by focusing on the hypothesis that disgust and social norm violations may share common computational components, both at a psychological and a neural level.

Abstract: The ideas of David (D.M.) Armstrong have helped shapecontemporary metaphysics and philosophy of mind. Thisbook is the first to offer an introduction to the full range ofArmstrong¿s thought. In a fair and dispassionate accountStephen Mumford examines in depth Armstrong¿s development of a core metaphysical programme consistent with a scientific view of the natural world. Although chiefly expository, Mumford¿s examination draws attention to areas ofweakness within Armstrong¿s account and highlights issues about which there is room for further debate
