Abstract: We present a dynamic model of social network formation in which a fixed number of agents interact in overlapping social groups. We derive several results on the formation of links in such networks, including results on the degree distribution, on comparative statics relating degree and group size, and on the dynamics of homophily. In particular, we derive comparative statics showing that degree is typically positively related to social group size but negatively related to the size of the overlap across multiple social groups. This is supported by evidence from a Facebook dataset. We also show that homophily over an agent's lifespan in the network can be non-monotonic, reaching a global maximum in some period before eventually decreasing. Abstract: Taking a social relations approach to team diversity, the authors propose that faultlines - hypothetical dividing lines that split a team into relatively homogeneous subgroups - impact the team members' propensity to exhibit social loafing behaviour. They further propose that this individual-level reaction to the faultline structure of the team can differ among team members, depending on the size of their subgroup and on their individual social competence. These assumptions were tested in a sample of real teams working on an intellective task during which social loafing behavior was video-coded. In partial support of the hypotheses, generalized mixed models revealed that social loafing behavior was most common for team members who were part of a team with strong faultlines, who belonged to the larger subgroup in their team, and who exhibited low levels of social competence. Abstract: Investigated the cognitive and affective experiences of members of minorities and majorities. Cognitive preoccupation with one's group membership and affective reactions are assumed to influence collective identification. Study 1 assigned subjects (n=61 college students, mean age 24 years) to a numerical majority or minority and measured cognitive preoccupation, emotional state, and collective identification with their ingroup. Minority members were more preoccupied with their group membership, experienced less positive affect, and identified more strongly with their ingroup. Study 2 (n=82, mean age 28 years) replicated these results irrespective of the group's relative status. Study 3 (n=102, mean age 23 years) showed that these findings only applied to groups with low power. However, collective identification was also increased in majorities with high power. The results were replicated in a field study involving a total of 194 college students (mean age 25 years) that categorized themselves as belonging to a majority or minority in one of seven social dimensions. The conceptual distinction of status and power and their interrelation in social groups is discussed, and implications for minority research are outlined. zitiert von 67
