(2009): Cross-cultural variation of speech-accompanying gesture. A review. In: Language and Cognitive Processes 24 (2), S. 145-167. DOI: 10.1080/01690960802586188
Abstract: This article reviews the literature on cross-cultural variation of gestures. Four factors governing the variation were identified. The first factor is the culture-specific convention for form-meaning associations. This factor is involved in well-known cross-cultural differences in emblem gestures (e.g., the OK-sign), as well as pointing gestures. The second factor is culture-specific spatial cognition. Representational gestures (i.e., iconic and deictic gestures) that express spatial contents or metaphorically express temporal concepts differ across cultures, reflecting the cognitive differences in how direction, relative location and different axes in space are conceptualised and processed. The third factor is linguistic differences. Languages have different lexical and syntactic resources to express spatial information. This linguistic difference is reflected in how gestures express spatial information. The fourth factor is culture-specific gestural pragmatics, namely the principles under which gesture is used in communication. The culture-specificity in politeness of gesture use, the role of nodding in conversation, and the use of gesture space are discussed.

(2007) : A Comprehensive Human Factors Analysis of Wearable Computers Supporting a Hospital Ward Round: 4th International Forum on Applied Wearable Computing 2007: Tel Aviv, Israel: IEEE, S. 1-12
Abstract: This paper focuses on the social computing and usability issues connected to the use of a wearable computer as support of the clinical ward round. An evaluation of a prototype system was performed with a group of doctors and nurses, who physically tried out the system in a simulated ward round scenario and were interviewed about their experiences. Generally, the doctors and nurses felt such system would be helpful in diminishing paper work and enhance collaboration. The most critical component of the prototype system was the navigation in electronic patient documents using gesture interaction. The doctors found the gestures difficult to learn and were worried the patient contact would suffer as a result of too much attention being needed by the gestures.

Abstract: We endow agents with the capability to open interactions based on their perception of the gaze and direction of attention of others in a virtual environment. The capability is geared towards the earliest part of interaction initiation, where agents may be at some distance from each other and may not initially have knowledge of each other's presence. An important idea in our work is that the start of interaction be initiated in a graceful manner involving exchanges of subtle cues before overt interaction commitments are made. Synthetic vision, attention and memory are used to implement the perceptually-based agent theory of mind. Theory of Mind is used to infer information about the intention of the other to interact based on their eye, head and body directions, locomotion and greeting gestures. An agent's interaction behavior is therefore driven not only by its interaction goal, but also by its theory of the goal of the other based on perception. We have implemented this system and used it to automate and evaluate social interaction behaviors between humans and agents in a virtual environment.
