Abstract: Sedentary behaviors in the elderly may have dramatic consequences on physical and mental health conditions, thus leading to increased needs for assistance, reduced autonomy, and higher social costs. In order to measure the degree of active behaviors performed by older adults during the day, it is important to design special measurement systems. Such systems need to be perceived as unobtrusive, easy to use and meaningful, as well as that do not require the subjects to change their daily routine, in such a way as to not hinder their compliance. Many of the wearable and not wearable systems already proposed in the literature, or available in the market as consumer devices, are not able to fully satisfy the specific requirements of older adults. In this paper, we present a novel force sensor instrumented shoe that can be used both indoor and outdoor, and that, by using simple sensing solutions, can measure the amount of time spent by the subject in a static or dynamic condition. Moreover, the shoe is able to transfer the measured data to a central unit for data processing and collection. A preliminary proof-of-concept has been conducted on young and elderly subjects, and results demonstrate the proposed system is able to correctly identify the user static/dynamic activity states. The reported solution seems to be promising and gives opportunities for improvements, as discussed in the paper.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cogsys.2016.07.007 Abstract: The research presented in this paper demonstrates a model for aiding human-robot companionship based on the principle of ‘human’ cognitive biases applied to a robot. The aim of this work was to study how cognitive biases can affect human-robot companionship in long-time. In the current paper, we show comparative results of the experiments using five biased algorithms in three different robots such as ERWIN, MyKeepon and MARC. The results were analysed to determine what difference if any of biased vs unbiased interaction has on the interaction with the robot and if the participants were able to form any kind of ‘preference’ towards the different algorithms. The experimental presented show that the participants have more of a preference towards the biased algorithm interactions than the robot without the bias.

In such kind of systems the environment is an active part of the system itself and provides input for runtime changing and adaptation. Modeling and representing systems like this is a hard task. In this paper we propose a biologically inspired approach that combined with the use of Agent-Based Modeling allows to create a means for analyzing emergent needs of the system at runtime and converting them into useful intelligent services to be provided. The experiment proposed for validating and illustrating the approach refers to the construction of smart university campus.

Abstract: In order to cope with many problems of everyday activities which requires robots to accomplish complex yet routine tasks in changing environments, this study focuses on universality and proposes seven principles of universal design with robots. These principles are used to design a robot management system that manages and controls information-structured environment with robots, ambient intelligent systems, and everyday objects. A particular scenario is considered to verify the feasibility of the proposed design method.

Abstract: Moderne Technik wird immer leistungsfähiger, aber auch komplexer. Die Bedienung neuer Geräte bereitet häufig Probleme. Um hier Abhilfe zu schaffen, wird beispielhaft für den Bereich der Anthropotechnik ein interdisziplinärer Weg beschritten: Zur Lösung von Bedienproblemen werden Konzepte der kognitiven Psychologie herangezogen. Am Beispiel eines Endgeräts, mit dem verschiedene Dienste wie z. B. Bildfernsprechen, Fernsehen, Bildschirmtext abgerufen werden können (Mehrdienste-Endgerät), wird untersucht, welchen Einfluss die Schnittstellengestaltung auf die mentale Modellbildung und damit die Benutzerfreundlichkeit hat. Im Rahmen eines experimentellen Versuchsdesigns wurden unter anderem ein graphisches Bediensystem mit einem Bediendialog in der Art einer "direkten Manipulation" und ein Bedienkonzept nach dem Prinzip "generischer Funktionen" erprobt und im Hinblick auf ihre Benutzerfreundlichkeit verglichen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass gängige Gestaltungsempfehlungen im Bereich der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion zu revidieren und im Hinblick auf bestimmte Benutzermerkmale sowie den konkreten Anwendungsbereich zu spezifizieren sind. Während für den längerfristigen Gebrauch tastaturorientierte Bediensysteme vor allem unter praktischen Gesichtspunkten als benutzerfreundlicher zu beurteilen sind, zeigt das graphische Bediensystem für ungeübte Benutzer bestimmte Vorteile. Dabei profitieren besonders Benutzer mit einer geringen Visualisierungsfähigkeit von der Anschaulichkeit einer graphischen Darstellung. Benutzer, die als Visualisierer charakterisiert werden können, bevorzugen dagen eine sprachliche Form der Informationspräsentation.
