(2015): Nonverbal and Verbal Expressions of Men’s Sexism in Mixed-Gender Interactions. In: Sex Roles 72 (5-6), S. 252-261. DOI: 10.1007/s11199-015-0451-7
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11199-015-0451-7 Abstract: This study examined the nonverbal and verbal expressions of hostile and benevolent sexism. Hostile sexism is sexist antipathy and benevolent sexism is a chivalrous belief that women are warm yet incompetent. We predicted that hostile sexist men would display less affiliative expressions but benevolent sexist men would display more affiliative expressions during mixed-gender interactions. Twenty-seven pairs of U.S. male and female undergraduates from a private university in New England participated in this study. These mixed-gender dyads participated in two social interactions: a structured trivia game followed by an unstructured conversation period. During the trivia game, men with more benevolent sexism were perceived to be more patient overall when waiting for the woman to answer the trivia questions. Furthermore, we examined the men’s nonverbal and verbal expressions during the unstructured interaction—naïve raters made impression ratings of the men’s nonverbal and verb al behavior, and trained coders counted the frequency of specific nonverbal cues (e.g., smiles). A word count software was used for verbal content analysis. As predicted, more hostile sexism was associated with less affiliative nonverbal and verbal expressions (e.g., less approachable, less friendly, and less smiling), but more benevolent sexism was associated with more affiliative nonverbal and verbal expressions (e.g., more approachable, more likely to smile, and more positive word usage). The effects held after controlling for men’s personality traits and partners’ nonverbal behavior. Differential behavioral expressions of benevolent and hostile sexism have theoretical importance as we can examine how sexism maintains the status quo at the interpersonal level. (2015): Communicating eating-related rules. Suggestions are more effective than restrictions. In: Appetite 86, S. 45-53
Abstract: Compared restrictive and suggested eating-related rules intended to curb unhealthy eating behavior to assess their effects on food consumption. Both restrictive and suggested rules were expected to be equally successful initially, but a restrictive rule was predicted to have negative after-effects once it was no longer in place. The role of reactance in the expected behavioral differences was empirically tested. Participants were exposed to M&M's while completing a creativity task. Consumption was either explicitly forbidden (restrictive rule) or mildly discouraged (suggested rule). In the control condition, participants were either explicitly allowed to consume M&M's or were not provided M&M's at all. Measures of psychological reactance were assessed following completion of the task. Participants then took part in a taste test in which they were allowed to freely consume M&M's. Results showed that both types of rules were equally successful initially in curbing unhealthy eating behavior during the creativity task. However, when allowed to eat freely, participants in the restrictive-rule group consumed more M&M's in the taste test and reported higher levels of psychological reactance than the suggested-rule participants or control group participants, supporting expectations that restrictive rules result in a negative after-effect. Both communication forms are considered initially successful in reducing unhealthy eating behavior, but a suggestive rule appears to be a more successful way to communicate healthy habits that remain in effect even after the rule is no longer in place. zitiert von 13

(2012): Amoralisch sein. Psychopathie und moralisches Unvermogen. In: Journal fur Philosophie & Psychiatrie 1. Online verfügbar unter http://www.jfpp.org/100.html
Abstract: It is argued that amoralists, i.e. people who do not care about morality, do not exist in reality. Real cases of psychopathy imply moral incapacity, which is not something that amoralists suffer from. Hence amoralists and psychopaths are not identical. I then discuss an argument by Gilbert Ryle and conclude that psychopaths lack the capacities that let other people care about morality. Empathy is the main moral capacity; in healthy people moral education results in their caring about morality, which cannot simply cease. I conclude that there are no amoralists in the philosophical sense of the term.

In: Linguistische Berichte, S. 123-143

(1992): Interpersonal underpinnings of request strategies: General principles and differences due to culture and gender. In: Journal of personality and social psychology 62 (2), S. 246-256. DOI: 10.1037/0022-3514.62.2.246
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1037/0022-3514.62.2.246 Abstract: Several hypotheses derived from P. Brown and S. Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory were tested with Ss from the US and Korea. Ss imagined themselves in situations in which they were to make a request. Ss then indicated exactly what they would say in each situation and what their perceptions of the request size, the hearer’s power, and the closeness of their relationship with the hearer were. Consistent with Brown and Levinson’s theory, power, distance, and size contributed significantly to politeness. Significant predictor variable interactions suggested that an additive model is not appropriate. Finally, there was evidence of cultural and gender differences in the weighting of these predictor variables. These differences can partially account for cultural and gender differences in language use. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract: Outlines the basic principles of ethnomethodology, which is described as a special discipline of phenomenological sociology, and discusses its relationships with a Marxist theory of verbal communication. The article focuses on the following points: (1) the scientific-historical background of ethnomethodological sociology, (2) the view of society it reflects, (3) the object of its research, and (4) methodological positions in research on this topic.

(1979): Perceptions of assertion: An empirical analysis. In: Behavior Therapy 10 (3), S. 404-411. DOI: 10.1016/S0005-7894(79)80028-3
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/S0005-7894(79)80028-3 Abstract: 321 undergraduates took part in an investigation comparing perceptions of assertive communication with reactions to other styles of communication. In the 1st of 2 experiments, assertion was rated as more appropriate and efficacious than either nonassertion or aggression. Assertion was viewed as more polite, less neurotic, less hostile, and more satisfying to the recipient than aggression. Assertion was viewed, relative to nonassertion, as less polite, more hostile, and less satisfying to the recipient. In Exp II, 96 Ss rated the 3 communication styles employed in Exp I, using the same dependent measures, plus a 4th style, assertion plus ’extra consideration.’ Results replicated the findings of Exp I. The assertion plus extra consideration condition was perceived as comparable in effectiveness and appropriateness to assertion, while being rated as kinder, less hostile, and more satisfying to recipients.
