DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ROMAN.2018.8525843 Abstract: For a proactive and user-centered robotic assistance and communication, an assistive robot must make decisions about the level of assistance to be provided. Therefore, the robot must be aware of the preferences and the capabilities of the elderly. At the same time, relying on a sensing setup which is totally embedded in the assistive robot would increase its usability. In the framework of the RAMCIP project, a novel skills evaluation methodology has been developed to make the robot aware of the user's perceptual, cognitive and motor skills. This paper presents such a methodology and its preliminary evaluation. Based on a task analysis of the activities for which the robot provides assistance, the user's skills are given a score which is updated at different time scales based on the source of information. Highly reliable information is gathered from caregivers at a low rate by means of a graphical interface hosted by the robot. This information refers to standard medical examinations. Based on the modules for motion tracking, object and activity recognition, specific actions of ADL are selected to update motor skills score at a higher rate, which is typically twice per day. The two sources of information are then fused in a Kalman filter. Preliminary results on the illustrative example of arm precision show that the robot's sensing and cognitive capabilities suffice to obtain a state-of-the-art evaluation of the arm precision skill.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/HRI.2016.7451824 Abstract: Robots are an increasingly discussed solution for assistance of seniors. Importance of testing natural interaction therefore becomes crucial. This paper presents first results of a study with an autonomous mobile social service robot prototype that was deployed in 18 private households of senior adults aged 75 years and older for a total of 371 days. Findings show that utility met the users' expectations. However, the robot was rather seen as a toy instead of being supportive for independent living. Furthermore, despite of an emergency function of the robot, perceived safety did not increase. Reasons for this might be the good health conditions of our users, a lack of technological robustness and slow performance of the prototype. However, users believed that a market ready version of the robot would be vital for supporting people who are more fragile and more socially isolated.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ACII.2015.7344568 Abstract: We present LISSA - Live Interactive Social Skill Assistance - a web-based system that helps people practice their conversational skills by having short conversations with a human like virtual agent and receiving real-time feedback on their nonverbal behavior. In this paper, we describe the development of an interface for these features and examine the viability of real time feedback using a Wizard of Oz prototype. We then evaluated our system using a speed-dating study design. We invited 47 undergraduate male students to interact with staff and randomly assigned them to intervention with LISSA or a self-help control group. Results suggested participants who practiced with the LISSA system were rated as significantly better in nodding when compared to a self-help control group and marginally better in eye contact and gesturing. The system usability and surveys showed that participants found the feedback provided by the system useful, unobtrusive, and easy to understand.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ROMAN.2015.7333562 Abstract: In this paper we present a system for all and sundry to create robotic applications which is characterized by adaptivity on different levels. First, users are enabled to create their own applications (e.g. play a card game with robot) by the usage of a decision making framework for robot companions. Second, within a created application the robot itself adapts its behavior via user feedback based on a decision making algorithm (e.g. teach the robot a card game based on user feedback). In dependency of the user's expertise, he or she has different possibilities of enhancing the robot's capabilities. Especially for the non-expert user a tool has been developed which provides a graphical user interface to configure applications. The usability of the tool has been evaluated with 5 participants of the age group 40+. The results show that the technical requirements to include non-experts are fulfilled by the framework but also reveal ways to improve the tool, such as the placement of the assistance mechanisms offered to the user.
