DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15454349 Abstract: A general theoretical model of interpersonal perception called PERSON (personality, error, residual, stereotype, opinion, and norm) is developed. This model reparameterizes a weighted-average model (WAM; Kenny, 1991; Kenny, Albright, Malloy, & Kashy, 1994) into six components. Two of those components refer to categorical information and 4 to behavioral information. Based on a formal model, for which parameters are estimated from previous research studies, several implications are developed. The PERSON model can explain the low level of consensus in person perception, the fact that consensus does not increase with greater acquaintance, the strong stability of interpersonal judgment, the overconfidence effect, and the fact that short-term judgments are sometimes as accurate as long-term judgments. The PERSON model generally predicts that acquaintance is not as important in person perception as generally thought.

Abstract: Bisher hat die Wissenssoziologie ihre Thematik nur mit einer sehr starken Einschränkung verfolgt. Es ging ihr primär um das Wissen "der anderen". Im Unterschied dazu geht es in den hier vorgelegten Studien immer auch um das soziologische Wissen selbst. Ihre Frage lautet, wie dieses Wissen den semantischen Haushalt der modernen Gesellschaft verändert hat. Und ihre Antwort besagt, dass es neben der Selbstbeschreibung der sozialen Systeme nun auch eine Fremdbeschreibung gibt, die aus größerer Distanz zugleich mehr Wissen und weniger Wissen anbieten kann, als in den Systemen selbst verfügbar ist.

Interactive tangible media "iTMedia" is proposed to explore these issues. Personal robotics is a major area to investigate these ideas. A new design methodology for personal and emotional robotics is proposed. Sciences of the artificial and intelligence have been investigated. A short history of artificial intelligence is presented in terms of logic, heuristics, and mobility; a science of intelligence is presented in terms of imitation and understanding; intelligence issues for robotics and intelligence measures are described. A design methodology for personal robots based on science of emotion is investigated. We investigate three different aspects of design: visceral, behavioral, and reflective. We also discuss affect and emotion in robots, robots that sense emotion, robots that induce emotion in people, and implications and ethical issues of emotional robots. Personal robotics for the elderly is investigated to explore these ideas.

Abstract: ned the relative effects of personal and perceived social norms, and personal habits on German commuters' travel mode choices. 160 adult Germans who had to commute to work at least 1 day per week maintained standardized, personal logs of their work-related travel mode choices for a 4-week period. Personal norms, perceived social norms, personal commuter habits, and sociodemographic variables had been assessed in prior face-to-face interviews. The results revealed that strong specific habits moderated the primary effects of personal norms on travel choice mode. Weak specific habits exerted only slight additional effects on travel choice mode. The findings are discussed within the framework of S. H. Schwartz and J. A. Howard's normative decision-making model of altruism. Several possibilities for integrating the concept of habits into the modeled process of norm activation are discussed in detail.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00115-003-1543-0 Abstract: Aus ethologischer und evolutionspsychologischer Forschung geht immer deutlicher hervor, dass Intelligenz keine monolithische Funktionseinheit ist, sondern eine Reihe von Spezialfunktionen zur Lebensbewältigung umfasst, welche zum Teil sogar unterschiedliche evolutionäre Wurzeln aufweisen. Eine dieser Unterformen wird in Anlehnung an den italienischen Politiker und Schriftsteller aus dem 15. bzw. 16. Jahrhundert, Niccolo Machiavelli, "machiavellische Intelligenz" genannt. Sie ermöglicht soziale Manipulation im Dienste egoistischer Zielerreichung. Damit wird sie zur fassbaren psychologischen Grundlage der Machtausübung in sozialen Verbänden. Machiavellische Intelligenz kann sowohl bei höheren Primaten wie auch beim Menschen beobachtet und evaluiert, bei letzterem sogar gemessen werden.

(2004): General theory of action? Inconsistencies in Hartmut Esser's action theory. In: Zeitschrift für Soziologie (186-205), S. 186-205
Abstract: In this article Hartmut Esser's claim to have designed a "general theory of action" is analyzed critically. This reveals that Esser's action theory contains remediable inconsistencies due to the modeling of the theoretical statements. The application of fuzzy-logic is proposed to provide for more adequate and simpler modeling. Basically it is questionable whether the "psychologization of sociology", which is a consequence of his framing-concept, is the right way for a sociology that is interested in explaining social aggregations.

(2004): From humanoid embodiment to theory of mind. In: EMBODIED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, S. 202-218
Abstract: We propose to investigate the foundations of communication and symbolic behavior by means or a robotics approach, i.e. by studying how these behaviors might emerge from the physical dynamics of an agent and its sensory-motor interactions with the real world. In this perspective, the human-robot interface problem can be viewed as one of coupling the interaction dynamics of all agents. Through a number of case studies we will show that within this interaction dynamics there is sparse global structure, i.e. a structure that can be characterized by only a small number of points in phase space, and that it is best to interact with the agent, i.e. interfere with its dynamics, at these points. We introduce a humanoid robot with the capability for dynamic full-body movement. The preliminary results of two experiments, sitting and standing up, are presented. Lastly, experiments with self exploratory learning of embodiment and visual motor learning of neonatal imitation abilities are introduced.

Abstract: This study investigates the interface of power and politeness in the realization of disagreements in naturalistic language data. Power and politeness are important phenomena in face-to-face interaction. Disagreement is an arena in which these two key concepts are likely to be observed together: both disagreement and the exercise of power entail a conflict, and, at the same time, conflict will often be softened by the display of politeness (defined as marked relational work). The concept of power is of special interest to the field of linguistics in that language is one of the primary means to exercise power. Often correlated with status and regarded as an influential aspect of situated speech, the workings of the exercise of power, however, have rarely been formally articulated. This study provides a theoretical framework within which to analyze the observed instances of disagreement and their co-occurrence with the exercise of power and display of politeness. In this framework, a checklist of propositions that allow us to operationalize the concept of power and identify its exercise in naturalistic linguistic data is combined with a view of language as socially constructed. A qualitative approach is used to analyze the concepts of power and politeness. The material for analysis comes from three different contexts: (1) a sociable argument in an informal, supportive and interactive family setting, (2) a business meeting among colleagues within a research institution, and (3) examples from public discourse collected during the US Election 2000.

Abstract: On the one hand Watzlawick quotes that it is not possible 'not to communicate', on the other hand the communicative abilities of severely disabled individuals are often denied. However communication as a mutual process of 'accommodation and assimilation' (Piaget) happens wherever our behaviour is perceived as an expression by another person and this expression is answered in an adequate way. Only a reliable experience of this circular process allows the baby a healthy undisturbed development. If the baby cannot make this experience or if this process abruptly comes to an end, it can lead to persistent disabilities in later years. Basal communication takes up all the behaviour patterns of our partner - from sound to mimics to breathing rhythm - understands them as a way of expression and communication and tries to find adequate answers. Basal communication takes up the interrupted circular process of 'accommodation and assimilation' which quite often leads to surprisingly new deve lopments. Abstract: We submit that the most interesting and fruitful human-robot interaction (HRI) may be possible when the robot is able to interact with the human as a true team member, rather than a tool. However, the benefits of shared control can all too easily be overshadowed by challenges inherent to blending human and robot initiative. The most important requirements for peer-peer interaction are system trust and ability to predict system behavior. The human must be able to understand the reason for and effects of robot initiative. These requirements can only be met through careful application of human factors principles and usability testing to determine how users interact with the system. This paper discusses the recent human participant usability testing, which took our current implementation to task using a search and rescue scenario within a complex, real-world environment. The purpose of testing was to examine how human operators work with the robotic system at each level of autonomy, and how interaction with the robot should be structured to enable situation awareness and task completion. Analyses revealed that our architecture equally supported situation awareness and target detection by novices and experts, although experienced users were more likely to have more performance expectations of the interface. Results also had implications regarding the ability of participants to effectively utilize the collaborative workspace and, most importantly, their ability to understand and willingness to accept robot initiative.

Abstract: When I hit my thumb with a hammer, I get mad at myself, at the person making me do the work, and at the cruel and malignant universe, but I don’t get mad at the hammer. By contrast, when my computer crashes, or fails to give me a file that I know is there, or tells me that I failed to shut it down properly when it was the one that crashed, I get mad at it. True, if I stop to think about it, I may get mad at the people who designed, programmed, or last updated it, but my immediate reaction is more personal. Even my language, as I write this, is illustrative: I hit myself with the hammer, while my computer does things to me. The computer is, at some level, just a hunk of silicon and plastic- every bit as inert as the hammer. Somewhere between the hammer and the computer lies a threshold of complexity and capacity for autonomous action that, when surpasses, tempts us to ascribe agent-like qualities such as awareness and intent. We interact with agents on a social level and increasingly so with increases in the complexity of behavior and of interaction which the agent affords. Since we cant predict or understand all of an agent's actions, should behave in various roles and contexts. These codes enable us to infer what specific behavior mean, in terms of the agent's intentions and beliefs. Not surprisingly, we have evolved a wealth of such expectations for interactions with the most complex and unpredictable agents with whom we regularly work and live - other humans. Some of these codes are quite explicit- such as the communication protocols in which pilots and air traffic controllers are trained, or the rituals of a religious service- but others subtle and largely implicit. These patterns or rules of expectation are what we call "etiquette."

Abstract: Many different things are said to have meaning: people mean to do various things; tools and other artifacts are meant for various things; people mean various things by using words and sentences; natural signs mean things; representations in people's minds also presumably mean things. In Varieties of Meaning, Ruth Garrett Millikan argues that these different kinds of meaning can be understood only in relation to each other. What does meaning in the sense of purpose (when something is said to be meant for something) have to do with meaning in the sense of representing or signifying? Millikan argues that the explicit human purposes, explicit human intentions, are represented purposes. They do not merely represent purposes; they possess the purposes that they represent. She argues further that things that signify, intentional signs such as sentences, are distinguished from natural signs by having purpose essentially; therefore, unlike natural signs, intentional signs can misrepresent or be false. Part I discusses "Purposes and Cross-Purposes"—what purposes are, the purposes of people, of their behaviors, of their body parts, of their artifacts, and of the signs they use. Part II then describes a previously unrecognized kind of natural sign, "locally recurrent" natural signs, and several varieties of intentional signs, and discusses the ways in which representations themselves are represented. Part III offers a novel interpretation of the way language is understood and of the relation between semantics and pragmatics. Part IV discusses perception and thought, exploring stages in the development of inner representations, from the simplest organisms whose behavior is governed by perception-action cycles to the perceptions and intentional attitudes of humans.

According to the interpersonal negotiation strategies model of Selman, social cognitions are described with respect to steps of social information processing and to level of perspective coordination. Perspective coordination may be promoted by peer interaction, especially by dilemma discussions as known from the field of moral education. With a pre-post control group design it is investigated whether small group dilemma discussions on conflict examples promote levels of perspective coordination in the post-test conflict examples. The result of the study show that members of the small discussion groups had higher post-test scores in perspective coordination regarding two of the four information processing steps compared to participants of the individualistic condition. Effects were independent from cognitive abilities. Further more, the level of three of the four steps correlated with teachers' rat ing of p articipants' social behavior measured before the intervention. Abstract: There has been a slow but growing realization on the part of the educational technology research community that designers of educational tools must go beyond the purely cognitive aspects of working with computers and factor in the social and psychological aspects as well. The design of appropriate etiquette in educational systems requires adding an additional layer to the issues of traditional interest to HCI researchers and developers. Etiquette is closely connected to contexts of activity and practice—to the goal/contexts/role patterns that structure interactions in a domain. A better understanding of these patterns [7] is essential to building tact and courtesy into our computer programs. We also need to learn from existing research, particularly that of teacher behavior and its effect on student learning and motivation. For instance, a review of the literature on nonverbal behavior indicates that eye contact, gestures, vocal inflections, body movement, and combinations of nonverbal behaviors conveying enthusiasm, animation, and variation of stimuli can positively affect student motivation, attention, teacher ratings, immediate recall, and achievement [4]. This research can be of great utility in the design of appropriate behaviors for pedagogical agents. However, as the three studies described here suggest, we must be careful not to apply these findings to the HCI context indiscriminately. This strategy, though easy to follow, may not always be the most appropriate. Instead, pedagogical etiquette in educational software must be carefully crafted based on sound empirical research sensitive to the complexities of learning and human psychology.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/08839510490496789 Abstract: In this work, a surveillance network composed of a set of sensors and a fusion center is designed as a multiagent system. Negotiation among sensors (agents) is proposed to solve the task-to-sensor assignment problem (the allocation of tasks to sensors), addressing several aspects. First, the fusion center determines the tasks (system tasks) to be performed by the network at each management cycle. To do that, a fuzzy reasoning system determines the priorities of these system tasks by means of a symbolic inference process using the fused data received from all sensors. In addition, a fuzzy reasoning process, similar to that performed in the fusion center, is proposed to evaluate the priority of local tasks (sensor tasks) now executed by each sensor. The network coordination procedure will be based on the system-task priorities, computed in the fusion center, and on the local priorities evaluated in each sensor. Priority values for system and sensor tasks will be the basis to guide a negotiation process among sensors in the multiagent system. The validity of the fuzzy reasoning approach is supported by the fact that it has been able to manage environmental situations in a similar way as experienced human operators do. Social intelligence enables natural and socially appropriate interactions. Its importance is gaining a growing interest among not just the human-computer interaction researchers but also robot technology researchers and developers. This article discusses the definition, importance, and benefits of social intelligence in human and robot collaborative systems. The virtual social environment is employed to implement an experimental social intelligence system because of its low cost and high flexibility. Software robots (i.e. agents) with the social intelligence model have been implemented by featuring an emotion model and a personality model under the virtual environment. The social intelligence model that handles affective responses is based on the theories of personality, emotion, and human-media interaction such as cognitive appraisal theory and media equation. The experiment was conducted with the virtual learning collaborative system to examine the effect of the social intelligence model in the collaborative system. The data showed that the users had more positive impressions about the usefulness and the application and learning experience when the cooperative agent displayed some social responses with personality and emotions. It should be noted here that the cooperative agent did not provide any explicit assistance for the human user such as giving clues and showing answers, and yet the user's evaluation on the usefulness of the learning system was influenced by the social agent. The data also suggested that the cooperative agent contributed to the effectiveness of the learning system.

Abstract: As much as people crave more human like computers, experimental evidence shows that people do display polite behavior towards computers, preceiving human qualities they don't actually have. The difficulty of explaining why people are polite to dogs opened up an opportunity for a fundamental insight into human computer interaction. If people are polite to dogs, even when such behavior is inexplicable, might people be also be polite to computers? While humans encompass all of these elements, computers, pictorial agents, interactive voice response systems, robot dogs and many other technologies exhibit some of these characteristics and seem to elicit some social responses. Pessimists examine the expansiveness of etiquette and frown at another faulty heuristic that demonstrates the limited cognitive processing skills of people. The author takes a different view: polite responses to computers represent the best impulse of people, the impulse to err on the side of kindness and humanity.
