    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/1059601103261472

Abstract: Facing mounting evidence of academic dishonesty on America's college campuses, many schools in the 1990s implemented academic honor codes to stem the tide. Previous research concerning academic honor codes and other ethics codes highlight the importance of enacting a more ethical organizational culture as well as involving many organizational members in the process. Through the illustrative case of a major public university that struggled to meet this normative goal as it implemented an academic honor code, this article introduces an action learning perspective on how the design and implementation of ethics codes can help effect change in the ethical culture by instilling and reinforcing the values of honesty and integrity. It is argued that codes must be designed with full acknowledgement of the traditions and culture present in the student body, with the involvement of virtually all organization members, to elicit a full understanding of the ethical culture system. • Wahl, Klaus (2015): Wie kommt die Moral in den Kopf?. Von der Werteerziehung zur Persönlichkeitsförderung. Berlin: Springer Spektrum

(2) Was treibt unser Verhalten wirklich an?

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/TOH.2013.54

Abstract: Robot Learning from Demonstration (RLfD) has been identified as a key element for making robots useful in daily lives. A wide range of techniques has been proposed for deriving a task model from a set of demonstrations of the task. Most previous works use learning to model the kinematics of the task, and for autonomous execution the robot then relies on a stiff position controller. While many tasks can and have been learned this way, there are tasks in which controlling the position alone is insufficient to achieve the goals of the task. These are typically tasks that involve contact or require a specific response to physical perturbations. The question of how to adjust the compliance to suit the need of the task has not yet been fully treated in Robot Learning from Demonstration. In this paper, we address this issue and present interfaces that allow a human teacher to indicate compliance variations by physically interacting with the robot during task execution. We validate our approach in two different experiments on the 7 DoF Barrett WAM and KUKA LWR robot manipulators. Furthermore, we conduct a user study to evaluate the usability of our approach from a non-roboticists perspective.

Abstract: This article examines structures of social control that became institutionalized in the United States in the 1870s and 1880s. In particular, it examines how key philanthropic and penal institutions within New York City, including the school, workhouse and prison, were represented in the illustrated popular press as sites for both controlling and training an industrializing workforce. Examining how the language of scientific management seeped into the social realm, this essay argues that visual representations of these sites helped to reinforce normative middle-class ideals about education, work and punishment. Examining the ways that artists interpreted and framed these sites for a group of primarily middle-class viewers and readers, this essay argues that social systems helped to construct an ideal, imagined citizen who is, first and foremost, an efficient worker. The purpose of these institutions was, in main part, to teach their inmates to labor and to replicate the state apparatus by maintaining social order. This article also deals with the increasingly structured and professional implementation of education and social work during the years leading up to the Progressive Era.

Abstract: The concept of active ageing comprises the maintenance of societal participation throughout the life span into old age. "Good" ageing in line with this activity paradigm develops into a starting point of social inequality rather than being its result. Based on the German Ageing Survey (DEAS) we investigated access to volunteering and to educational activities depending on social and spatial aspects of inequality. Societal participation is socially and spatially structured. Individuals from a lower social class are less often involved in educational activities or in volunteering. Moreover, individuals living in economically disadvantaged regions are less likely to participate than in economically strong regions. Disadvantages cumulate if low individual resources overlap with poor economic conditions in the living area. Measures to facilitate participation should be taken on the local level to enhance opportunities for volunteering and educational activities. This should help to sustainably increase the participation of individuals from lower social classes.

    DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22684874

Abstract: Matusov and Smith (Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science 46: 3, 2012) use a genealogical analysis of the US middle class to show how classic concepts of identity do not only represent historically, politically, and culturally local phenomena, but also contribute to them. Their analysis nicely exemplifies how culture, as semiotic mediation, guides and constrains both societal as well as intra- and inter-personal structures. As not only the traditional notion of identity, but also the mainstream concept of culture, represents a limiting understanding of the person-culture relation, the first part of this article re-evaluates two main understandings of culture within psychology and then argue for a semiotic mediational conception that simultaneously guides and constrain not only intra- and inter-individual mechanisms, but also structures the socio-cultural sphere. What remains to be examined is: how exactly can personal agency and positioning be promoted and strengthened within the tensions of personal cultures and the socio-cultural sphere.

Abstract: Accepting Ulrich Beck's and Anthony Giddens’ diagnosis of contemporary society, many sociologists have equated post-tradition with reflexive modernization and with a social order characterized by a strong degree of individualization. This article reviews relevant empirical evidence concerning that individualization thesis, and concludes that it should be rejected. It proposes to view post-tradition, not as the harbinger of increased reflexivity and individualization, but as a shift in the mode of social control. Scarcity, religious belief and ideology, traditional ethics and roles, sensitivity to command and respect for authority, have lost much, if not all of their steering and controlling capacity. This does however not herald an epoch of individual autonomy, but a new form of social control, centered around the self, and in which schooling, the mass-media, the world of goods and therapy play an important role. zitiert von 53

ICORR 2005: Chicago, IL, USA: June 28-July 1, 2005: [Place of publication not identified]: I E E E, S. 465-468

Abstract: This paper defines the research area of socially assistive robotics, focusing on assisting people through social interaction. While much attention has been paid to robots that provide assistance to people through physical contact (which we call contact assistive robotics), and to robots that entertain through social interaction (social interactive robotics), so far there is no clear definition of socially assistive robotics. We summarize active social assistive research projects and classify them by target populations, application domains, and interaction methods. While distinguishing these from socially interactive robotics endeavors, we discuss challenges and opportunities that are specific to the growing field of socially assistive robotics.

  • Velthaus, Gerhard (2004): Moral, Angelpunkt zwischen Erziehung und Gesellschaft - die Leitvorstellung einer integrierten moralischen Erziehung. In: Padagogische Rundschau 58 (4), S. 415-436

(DIPF/Kr.)

Abstract: Discusses the role of the school in affirming the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of students. Every school has the opportunity and obligation to meet these needs of its students and to promote core values in its efforts to minister to the development of the whole person. The article concludes with a list of attributes of a 'good' school. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) zitiert von: 13

Abstract: Offers a critical appraisal of the consultation document on 'Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development' issued by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) in Britain in February 1994. The author argues that the analogy of development is misleading. The analogy does not make sense when applied to mental, as distinct from physical, matters. Moral matters do not have an innate beginning structure or a final stage beyond which they fail to grow. Moral maturity is not a matter of empirical fact; it involves value judgments about qualities we prize. The terms the spiritual, the moral, the social, and the cultural are discussed concerning their ambiguity in the OFSTED paper. • Sesink, Werner (1990): "Künstliche Intelligenz", Systemreproduktion und Bildung. In: Neue Sammlung 30 (2), S. 193-207

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1037/14866-000

Abstract: Morality is not a matter primarily of mere conduct. It involves conduct, but the essence of morality lies deeper than the act itself; motive, choice, are involved as well. Mere law-abiding is not morality in the strict sense of the word. One may keep the laws merely as a matter of blind habit. A prisoner in jail keeps the laws. A baby of four keeps the laws, but in neither case could such conduct be called moral. In neither of these cases do we find 'control' by the individual of impulses, nor 'conscious choice' of conduct. In the former compulsion was the controlling force, and in the second blind habit based on personal satisfaction. Conduct which outwardly conforms to social law and social progress is unmoral rather than moral. There is no instinct or inborn tendency that is primarily and distinctly moral as over against those that are social. That is the commonly accepted belief to-day. There is no moral instinct. Morality finds its root in the original nature of man, but not in a single moral instinct. Morality was much more susceptible to environmental influences than intellectual achievement, because it was much more a direction and guidance of capacities and tendencies possessed by every one. One's character is largely a product of one's environment. In proof of this, read the reports of reform schools, and the like. Children of criminal parents, removed from the environment of crime, grow up into moral persons. The pair of Jukes who left the Juke clan lost their criminal habits and brought up a family of children who were not immoral. Education cannot produce geniuses, but it can produce men and women whose chief concern is the wellbeing of the group. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) zitiert von: 24
