DOI: https://doi.org/10.23919/APSIPA.2018.8659624 Abstract: This paper addresses character expression for humanoid robots that play a social role via spoken dialogue so that the character matches to the given social role such as a lab guide or a counselor. While conventional methods of character expression mostly focused on changing the style of utterance texts, this study focuses on dialogue behavior features that may affect the impression of spoken dialogue. Specifically, we use five dialogue behavior features: utterance amount, backchannel frequency, backchannel variety, filler frequency, and switching pause length (the time until the system responds). We adopt three character traits of extroversion, emotional instability, and politeness for character expression. We then investigate the relationship between the dialogue behavior features and the character traits by conducting subjective evaluations. A statistical analysis of the subjective evaluations shows that the dialogue behavior features except for the backchannel variety are related to either of the character traits. By using the subjective evaluation scores on the relevant traits, we can train models to control the dialogue behavior features of a robot according to the desired character. Another experimental evaluation demonstrates the feasibility of character expression with regard to the traits of extroversion and politeness.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/0018720818765266 Abstract: OBJECTIVE We investigated adapting the interaction style of intelligent tutoring system (ITS) feedback based on human-automation etiquette strategies. BACKGROUND Most ITSs adapt the content difficulty level, adapt the feedback timing, or provide extra content when they detect cognitive or affective decrements. Our previous work demonstrated that changing the interaction style via different feedback etiquette strategies has differential effects on students' motivation, confidence, satisfaction, and performance. The best etiquette strategy was also determined by user frustration. METHOD Based on these findings, a rule set was developed that systemically selected the proper etiquette strategy to address one of four learning factors (motivation, confidence, satisfaction, and performance) under two different levels of user frustration. We explored whether etiquette strategy selection based on this rule set (systematic) or random changes in etiquette strategy for a given level of frustration affected the four learning factors. Participants solved mathematics problems under different frustration conditions with feedback that adapted dynamic changes in etiquette strategies either systematically or randomly. RESULTS The results demonstrated that feedback with etiquette strategies chosen systematically via the rule set could selectively target and improve motivation, confidence, satisfaction, and performance more than changing etiquette strategies randomly. The systematic adaptation was effective no matter the level of frustration for the participant. CONCLUSION If computer tutors can vary the interaction style to effectively mitigate negative emotions, then ITS designers would have one more mechanism in which to design affect-aware adaptations that provide the proper responses in situations where human emotions affect the ability to learn.

Abstract: Nunchi, a foundational Korean indigenous cultural value, refers to one's ability to evaluate social situations and understand others' intentions and emotions through implicit cues. Although Nunchi is an important consideration when implementing culturally sensitive interventions and research, it has only recently started to be empirically explored (Kim, Kim, & Kelly, 2006; Heo, Park, & Kim, 2012). The current study attempted to validate the measurement model of the Nunchi Scale with Korean American and Caucasian American samples. In addition, the current study examined Nunchi's relationships to similar Western concepts such as social and emotional intelligence, and to diverse aspects of interpersonal and psychological functioning, separately for Korean American and Caucasian American samples. The role of the level of adherence to Asian cultural values in the relationship between Nunchi and emotional intelligence among Korean Americans was also examined. The sample comprised of 102 Korean Americans and 241 Caucasian Americans. Participants completed measures of Asian cultural values, Nunchi, social intelligence, emotional intelligence, satisfaction with life, subjective happiness, psychological distress, and interpersonal problems. A confirmatory factor analysis did not provide evidence to support the measurement model of the Nunchi Scale, but suggested the need to delete two items. Furthermore, results indicated that Nunchi is related to social and emotional intelligence. On the contrary to hypothesized predictions, the level of adherence to Asian cultural values did not moderate the relationship between Nunchi and emotional intelligence among Korean Americans. Similarly, ethnicity did not moderate the relationship between Nunchi and (a) emotional intelligence, (b) psychological functioning, and (c) interpersonal problems. Results indicated that Nunchi is positively related to psychological functioning and negatively related to interpersonal problems for both Korean Americans and Caucasian Americans. Ethnicity only moderated the relationship between the Nunchi-Interpersonal Awareness subscale and the Attention to Feelings subscale of emotional intelligence. Post hoc analyses were conducted to examine social and emotional intelligence as mediators, and found social intelligence as a stronger mediator for Korean Americans as compared to emotional intelligence as a stronger mediator for Caucasian Americans. A direct positive relationship of Nunchi on psychological distress among Korean Americans was also found in the mediation model. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)

(2018): Technology with embodied physical actions: Understanding interactions and effectiveness gains in teams working with robots. ProQuest Information & Learning.
Abstract: Teams in different areas are increasingly adopting robots to perform various mission operations. The inclusion of robots in teams has drawn consistent attention from scholars in relevant fields such as human-computer interaction (HCI) and human-robot interaction (HRI). Yet, the current literature has not fully addressed issues regarding teamwork by mainly focusing on the collaboration between a single robot and an individual. The limited scope of human-robot collaboration in the existing research hinders uncovering the mechanism of performance gains in teams that involve multiple robots and people. This dissertation research is an effort to address the issue by achieving two goals. First, this dissertation examines the impacts of interaction between human teammates alone and interaction between humans and robots on outcomes in teams working with robots. Second, I provide insight into the development of teams working with robots by examining ways to promote a team member’s intention to work with robots. In this dissertation, I conducted three studies in an endeavor to accomplish the aforementioned goals. The first study, in Chapter 2, turns to theory trust in teams to explain outcome gains in teams working with robots. This study reports result from a lab experiment, in which two people fulfilled a collaborative task using two robots. The results show that trust in robots and trust in teammates can be enhanced by a robot-building activity and team identification, respectively. The enhanced trust revealed unique impacts on different team outcomes: trust in robots increased only team performance while trust in teammates increased only satisfaction. Theoretical and practical contributions of the findings are discussed in the chapter. The second study, in Chapter 3, uncovers how team member’s efficacy beliefs interplay with team diversity to promote performance in teams working with robots. Results from a lab experiment reveal that individual operator’s performance is enhanced by team potency perception only when the team is ethnically diverse. This study contributes to theory by identifying team diversity as a limiting condition of performance gains for robot operators in teams. The third study, in Chapter 4, focuses on factors leading to the development of teams working with robots. I conducted an online experiment to examine how surface-level and deep-level similarity contribute to trust in a robotic partner and the impact of the trust on a team member’s intention to work with the robot in varying degrees of danger. This study generally shows that the possibility of danger regulates not only the positive link between the surface-level similarity and trust in robot and but also the link between intention to work with the robot and intention to replace a human teammate with the robot. Chapter 5, as a concluding chapter of this dissertation, discusses the theoretical and practical implications drawn from the three studies. Abstract: ABSTRACT The article is devoted to the linguistic and sociocultural features of the talkshow translationas a television discourse genre. The results of the research in the sphere of mass-media discourse represent a big value for understanding of different field correlation such as media and culture, sociocultural reality and its representation in media. It also has a big value for detecting of mass-media texts complicated semantic structure and different aspects of linguistic personality communicative behavior. The object of the study is television discourse as a linguistic and sociocultural phenomenon. The subjects of the study are linguistic and stylistic, linguistic and pragmatic, linguistic and sociocultural means that detect talk-show as a genre of TV discourse, realized in the situation of interpersonal communication, complicated by the mass communication conditions and institutional status of a TV presenter, who’s main aim is to affect the TV audience. One of the un explored and quite popular genres of television discourse is the talk show genre. In America the linguistic communication in the talk show genre is focused on the personality expression. The key concepts of such linguistic culture are self (self-presentation, self-made man), "challenge", "success" (only the best, geniuses). Thematic preferences and basic concepts of American linguistic culture are among the universal extralinguistic features of the talk show genre that takes in to account the national and cultural specifics of the communication in the American TV show.

Abstract: To tackle behavioral assistance for elderly care and disabled care in daily life, our laboratory rollout five welfare robots: walking support robot, walking rehabilitation robot, intelligent wheelchair robot, excretory support robot and handling robot. By integrating the multi-robots architecture and distributed sensor network, we proposes smart house which can be used for research in security assistance. Furthermore, aiming to implement the procedural assistance of rising and standing, transfer framework based on multi-robots architecture have been proposed. It aims to reduce the torso impact force and stabilize centre of gravity, establishing the rising transfer planning and standing transfer planning, combining with fall detection and rescue, which contributes to achieve secure and comfortable behavioral assistance in top-down way. Finally, we conducted experiments in our MWRA smart house to rising transfer, standing transfer, behavior assistance, fall detection and rescue. The experiments show MWRA have the auxiliary capabilities for ADLs(basic activities of daily living) and IADLs (instrumental activities of daily living), even EADLs(enhanced activities of daily living) in safety and comfortable way, which can be used in home, hospitals, rehabilitation center and other scenes for elderly care and disabled care.

DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29160930 Abstract: Social norms have a critical role in everyday decision-making, as frequent interaction with others regulates our behavior. Neuroimaging studies show that social-based and fairness-related decision-making activates an inconsistent set of areas, which sometimes includes the anterior insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and others lateral prefrontal cortices. Social-based decision-making is complex and variability in findings may be driven by socio-cognitive activities related to social norms. To distinguish among social-cognitive activities related to social norms, we identified 36 eligible articles in the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) literature, which we separate into two categories (a) social norm representation and (b) norm violations. The majority of original articles (>60%) used tasks associated with fairness norms and decision-making, such as ultimatum game, dictator game, or prisoner's dilemma; the rest used tasks associated to violation of moral norms, such as scenarios and sentences of moral depravity ratings. Using quantitative meta-analyses, we report common and distinct brain areas that show concordance as a function of category. Specifically, concordance in ventromedial prefrontal regions is distinct to social norm representation processing, whereas concordance in right insula, dorsolateral prefrontal, and dorsal cingulate cortices is distinct to norm violation processing. We propose a neurocognitive model of social norms for healthy adults, which could help guide future research in social norm compliance and mechanisms of its enforcement.
