(2016): Let justice be done. A performative view on Portuguese criminal trial procedures. In: Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies 13 (4), S. 400-415. DOI: 10.1080/14791420.2016.1160137
Abstract: Based on fieldwork at criminal courts in the metropolitan area of Lisbon, the article examines the performativity of criminal justice. The written and unwritten rules of criminal trial procedures are analysed as judicial scripts that guide the “making” of Justice. The formalities of the criminal trial, like those that prescribe the correct behaviour of defendants in Portuguese courts, are tied to the liminality of their social standing and their betwixt-and-between position in the court and in society. Script compliance is discussed as a central element within the production of criminal justice. Finally, the article suggests a performative view of justice, drawing on Butler's ideas regarding the enactment and construction of notions of gender.

(2016): Reflexive Epistemology and Social Complexity. In: Philosophy of the Social Sciences 20 (2), S. 149-169. DOI: 10.1177/004839319002000201
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1177/004839319002000201 Abstract: According to the article, Neurath’s reflexive epistemology - expressed by the metaphor of the ship in need of reconstruction on the open sea - represents a philosophical alternative to the classical and contemporary forms of scientific realism and ethical cognitivism, including Popper’s falsificationism. Against Quine’s reductive interpretation of Neurath’s boat argument as the basis for a ’naturalized epistemology,’ the article maintains that the metaphor suggests the idea of an insuperable situation of linguistic and conceptual circularity. This prevents any attempt at self-foundation in scientific knowledge, as well as in ethics and politics, and rules out any ’constructive philosophy’ aiming to break circularity in pursuit of some methodological beginning.

(2016) : Model Predictive Contact Control for Human-Robot Interaction In: VDE: Proceedings of ISR 2016: 47st International Symposium on Robotics: Berlin: VDE Verlag GmbH. Online verfügbar unter https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7559128/
Abstract: For shared human-robot workspaces and safe physical human-robot interaction, robots have to react adequately to intended and unintended contacts with their environment. In this contribution, a Nonlinear Model Predictive Control approach is presented that allows to move the robot end-effector along Cartesian trajectories while at the same time the robot reacts compliantly to contacts based on the estimated contact force. The impairment of the trajectory following task during contacts is minimized by exploiting the robot redundancy. The controller is based on the kinematic robot model. That means no exact knowledge of the robot dynamics is required and the approach is applicable to both fixed-base and mobile manipulators. In contrast to classical control strategies, joint constraints and self-collisions can be directly considered. In order to reduce the amount of unintended contacts, the control approach can also be combined with a collision avoidance extension. The developed algorithms are validated in experimental results on a KUKA LWR IV.

(2015): Higher incentives can impair performance. Neural evidence on reinforcement and rationality. In: Social cognitive and affective neuroscience 10 (11), S. 1477-1483
Abstract: Examined the assumption that monetary incentives always result in increased performance. Human decision makers frequently focus on past performance, a form of reinforcement learning occasionally at odds with rational decision making. An incentivized belief-updating task from economics was employed to investigate this conflict through measurements of neural correlates of reward processing. 85 healthy college students (aged 19-29 years) participated in 2 experiments while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. Results showed that higher incentives fail to improve performance when immediate feedback on decision outcomes is provided. Subsequent analysis of the feedback-related negativity, an early event-related potential following feedback, revealed the mechanism behind this paradoxical effect. As incentives increase, the win/lose feedback becomes more prominent, leading to an increased reliance on reinforcement and more errors. This mechanism is relevant for economic decision making and the debate on performance-based payment. zitiert von 15

(2015): Development of a Dating Violence Assessment Tool for Late Adolescence Across Three Countries. The Violence in Adolescents' Dating Relationships Inventory (VADRI). In: Journal of Interpersonal Violence, S. 2626-2646. DOI: 10.1177/0886260515593543
DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26160857 Abstract: Accurate assessment of dating violence (DV) is crucial for evaluation and intervention planning. However, extant self-report measurement tools of DV do not adequately consider age-, generation-, and culture-specific issues, which are essential for its accurate conceptualization. To address these gaps, we developed the Violence in Adolescents' Dating Relationships Inventory (VADR I: ) and evaluated its psychometric properties. The VADRI was developed based on a qualitative approach for item development through adolescents' individual interviews, focus groups, and experts' judgments, followed by a quantitative approach for tool assessment. Two aspects of DV were addressed: victimization and perpetration. After the necessary cultural and linguistic adaptation of items, the instrument was administered to 466 adolescents from three Spanish-speaking countries: Guatemala, Mexico, and Spain. The items were best represented by a one-factor solution in each country, which suggests that DV is a unidimensional construct combining victimization and perpetration. Analyses of item-level factor weights and differential item functioning were conducted aimed at obtaining information about items that best represented the construct, resulting in a 26-item final version that was cross-culturally equivalent. Convergent validity was supported by positive correlations with the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory, and reliability analyses yielded favorable results (with all Cronbach's α values above .90). We conclude that the VADRI is a valid and reliable instrument for the assessment of DV in various cultural contexts.

(2015) : Public Space Ambient Intelligence Systems: Benefits, Approaches and Challenges In: ARCS: ARCS 2015 - The 28th International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems. Proceedings: Berlin: Axel Springer SE, S. 1-6. Online verfügbar unter https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7107106/
Abstract: Modern public shared spaces offer a wide range of business and social functionalities. While they need to be efficiently operated, offering a secure environment is a prime objective. Manifold sensors and actuators, such as public lamps, surveillance systems or emergency phones, have been utilized in order to achieve this goal. Lights, cameras and a variate number of other sensors have been dealt with as discrete components. The problem may be looked at generically in solving the spatiotemporal requirements of monitoring the complete space, but plenty of factors should be carefully considered for feasible solution. The paper looks into utilizing the existing infrastructure within shared spaces, such as public lampposts for establishing a smart monitoring and management sensor-actuator networks or what we call public space Ambient Intelligence (PSAmI). We do this by presenting an appropriate system organization for such systems that is based on a real public space, Albert Park, NZ. Furthermore, we discuss the potential benefits of the integration of heterogeneous sensors and actuators. Afterwards, we explore the possible configurations for the lamp posts with a special focus on the camera component. Also, we identify the research challenges for realization of a PSAmI system.

(2015) : LISSA — Live Interactive Social Skill Assistance: 2015 International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction (ACII): Xian, China: IEEE, S. 173-179
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/ACII.2015.7344568 Abstract: We present LISSA - Live Interactive Social Skill Assistance - a web-based system that helps people practice their conversational skills by having short conversations with a human like virtual agent and receiving real-time feedback on their nonverbal behavior. In this paper, we describe the development of an interface for these features and examine the viability of real time feedback using a Wizard of Oz prototype. We then evaluated our system using a speed-dating study design. We invited 47 undergraduate male students to interact with staff and randomly assigned them to intervention with LISSA or a self-help control group. Results suggested participants who practiced with the LISSA system were rated as significantly better in nodding when compared to a self-help control group and marginally better in eye contact and gesturing. The system usability and surveys showed that participants found the feedback provided by the system useful, unobtrusive, and easy to understand.

(2015): Empathy development in adolescence predicts social competencies in adulthood. In: Journal of personality 83 (2), S. 229-241. DOI: 10.1111/jopy.12098
DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24684661 Abstract: This 23-year study explored the predictive associations between empathy development in adolescence and self-reported social competencies and outcomes in adulthood. Participants were 1,527 adults aged 35 years (48.3% female). The predictor variable (adolescent empathy) was measured yearly at the ages of 12 to 16 years. The outcome variables (adult empathy, communication skills, social integration, relationship satisfaction, and conflicts in relationships) were measured at the age of 35 years. Five important results stand out. First, longitudinal measurement invariance was established for the measure of adolescent empathy. Second, empathy tended to increase during the adolescent years. Third, significant interindividual differences in level and change of adolescent empathy were found. Fourth, gender was related to level of adolescent empathy, favoring girls over boys. Fifth, not only level but also change in adolescent empathy predicted individual differences in social competencies in adulthood two decades later. These findings demonstrate that developmental processes that are relevant for adjustment reveal long-term social consequences beyond the adolescent years. zitiert von 60
