    Abstract: Psychoanalysis and the social sciences have had an influence on one another since their respective beginnings. Although their relationship is generally recognized on a theoretical level, questions of concrete research methods have not been widely discussed. This essay supports the thesis that hermeneutics-related methods of qualitative social research are similar in many ways to the psychoanalytic method. Acceptance of these methods within psychoanalytic clinics and research could contribute to clearer conceptualization of unconscious processes. In turn, the psychoanalytic method could provide answers to unsolved problems of qualitative social research by basing category forming on an understanding of biographical work, the basic forms and procedural structures of which are distinguished by biological and social factors.
