Abstract: Thema der Studie sind Arbeitsteilungsmuster in modernen Familien. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat die strikte Trennung der Geschlechter in der Familie an Bedeutung verloren: Nicht mehr die fürsorgliche Vollzeitmutter und der erwerbstätige Wochenendvater gelten als Leitbild, sondern eine gleichberechtigte, moderne Elternschaft mit egalitären Verwirklichungschancen in Familie und Beruf. Anhand empirischer Ergebnisse wird auf folgende Fragen eingegangen: (1) Wie sind die familiären Lasten heute verteilt, (2) welche Probleme bestehen in der Arbeitsteilung der Paare und (3) welche Lösungsstrategien können zur Annäherung zwischen Leitbild und Wirklichkeit führen? zitiert von 1

Abstract: Due to the growing globalization of business processes, teamwork increasingly requires intercultural skills. Furthermore, many teams rely predominantly on electronic collaboration (virtual teams), requiring team members to develop and adhere to norms in a cue-deprived environment. In the current study, an online survey was conducted with 171 participants who fell into one of two subgroups of cross-cultural teams: members of either traditional or virtual teams. The two groups of team members were compared with regard to their importance ratings of several competencies for team performance. Starting with a large set of intercultural competencies derived from the literature, exploratory factor analyses yielded a 4-dimensional solution (working conscientiously, coping with stress and ambiguity, openness and perspective taking, and knowledge about other cultures). Among those clusters, only the cluster working conscientiously yielded substantial differences between traditional and virtual-team members, indicating specific requirements for cross-cultural collaboration for virtual as compared to traditional teams.

Abstract: This study examined online courses with collaborative learning components from 197 graduate students across three consecutive academic years. A student attitude survey containing 20 items and a student teamwork satisfaction scale containing 10 items on a 5-point Likert-type scale with three open-ended questions regarding their online collaborating experiences were collected during the final week of each semester. Results revealed that the three extracted online collaboration factors (Team Dynamics, Team Acquaintance, and Instructor Support) from the student attitude survey had moderate to high degrees of correlation with teamwork satisfaction. Results also revealed that the three collaboration factors accounted for 53% of the variance in online teamwork satisfaction. In addition, results from both surveys and open-ended questions revealed students favored working collaboratively in an online environment.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s12369-013-0197-8 Abstract: Previous work has documented that humans categorize robots as members of different social groups, thereby using socially relevant cues such as a robot's alleged gender or nationality. Importantly, these social categorization processes affect impressions people form about robots. In an experiment with N = 45 participants, we utilized a minimal-group paradigm and tested whether categorizing the humanoid robot NAO as an in-group member vs. an out-group member based on socially non-relevant features would result in higher levels of anthropomorphism and more positive evaluations of the robot. Innovatively, to assess anthropomorphism, we utilized an implicit measurement procedure. Results support our hypotheses: Perceived in-group membership with the robot resulted in a greater extent of anthropomorphic inferences about the robot and more positive evaluations. Moreover, compared to the out-group condition, participants who perceived NAO as an in-group member showed greater willingness to interact with robots in general.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/9816.003.0030 Abstract: Mobile robots that operate in a shared environmentwith humans need the ability to predict the movements ofpeople to better plan their navigation actions. In this paper, wepresent a novel approach to predict the movements of pedestrians.Our method reasons about entire trajectories that arise frominteractions between people in navigation tasks. It applies amaximum entropy learning method based on features that capturerelevant aspects of the trajectories to determine the probabilitydistribution that underlies human navigation behavior. Hence, ourapproach can be used by mobile robots to predict forthcominginteractions with pedestrians and thus react in a socially compliantway. In extensive experiments, we evaluate the capability andaccuracy of our approach and demonstrate that our algorithmoutperforms the popular social forces method, a state-of-the-artapproach. Furthermore, we show how our algorithm can be usedfor autonomous robot navigation using a real robot.

(2013): Kultur und Kognition. Wie das Selbst das Denken formt
Abstract: Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie die Kultur das Selbstkonzept einer Person beeinflusst und welche Konsequenzen das Selbstkonzept fur personliches Erleben und Handeln hat. Das Verhaltnis zwischen dem Einzelnen und sozialen Gruppen, denen der Mensch angehort, bzw. die relative Betonung von Autonomie versus sozialer Eingebundenheit, stellen eine der wichtigsten Kulturdimensionen dar. Entlang dieser Dimension finden sich auch Unterschiede in den Selbstkonzepten der jeweiligen Kulturmitglieder. So konnen Personen sich selbst einerseits vorwiegend durch solche Aspekte definieren, die die eigene Unabhangigkeit betonen (etwa eigene Ansichten, Fahigkeiten oder Eigenschaften). Andererseits kann das Selbst durch solche Merkmale definiert werden, die den sozialen Bezug zu anderen Personen herstellen (zum Beispiel eigene Gruppenmitgliedschaften oder soziale Rollen). Wann immer ein psychologischer Prozess die eigene Person betrifft, wirkt sich der Unterschied in den Selbstkonzepten auf das Ergebnis aus. Dies gilt etwa auch fur subjektive Erklarungen von eigenen und fremden Handlungen. Personen neigen generell dazu, den Einfluss von internen Merkmalen des Handelnden (etwa seine Motive oder Einstellungen) zu uberschatzen, situative Einflusse jedoch nicht ausreichend zu berucksichtigen. Eigene Entscheidungen werden uberdies als Ausdruck der personlichen Identitat angesehen und als solche oftmals auch im Nachhinein gerechtfertigt. Diese Urteilstendenzen sind in solchen Kulturen, die die Autonomie des Einzelnen betonen, besonders stark ausgepragt. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s12369-013-0182-2 Abstract: This article describes an emotional adaption approach to proactively trigger increased helpfulness towards a robot in task-related human-robot interaction (HRI). Based on social-psychological predictions of human behavior, the approach aims at inducing empathy, paired with a feeling of similarity in human users towards the robot. This is achieved by two differently expressed emotional control variables: by an explicit statement of similarity before task-related interaction, and implicitly expressed by adapting the emotional state of the robot to the mood of the human user, such that the current values of the human mood in the dimensions of pleasure, arousal, and dominance (PAD) are matched. The thereby shifted emotional state of the robot serves as a basis for the generation of task-driven emotional facial- and verbal expressions, employed to induce and sustain high empathy towards the robot throughout the interaction. The approach is evaluated in a user study utilizing an expressive robot head. The effectiveness of the approach is confirmed by significant experimental results. An analysis of the individual components of the approach reveals significant effects of explicit emotional adaption on helpfulness, as well as on the HRI-key concepts anthropomorphism and animacy. Abstract: Over the past three decades, and especially in the past 5 years, a great deal of effort has been dedicated to discovering genetic effects on a wide range of human disorders, diseases, and behaviors. In the field of behavioral genetics, there have been a tremendous number of studies examining genetic and environmental contributions to deviant behavior. Improvements in the methodology of twin and adoption studies have demonstrated the influence of genetics on mental disorders throughout the lifespan. This chapter describes different ways in which aggression, rule breaking, and deviant behaviors are defined and then discusses the many approaches to identifying genetic influences on these definitions. Following a brief introduction and literature review, the chapter defines common quantitative measures of deviant behavior, describes the development and subtypes of deviant behavior, and examines behavioral genetic studies of deviant behavior. Specifically, aggression and deviant behavior are examined from a perspective of twin and adoption studies (including gene by environment), as well as of familial variable studies (e.g., assortative mating). Abstract: Two studies demonstrate that the ease with which moral circle exemplars come to mind influences the size of the moral circle and moral behavior. Participants who generated three exemplars had significantly larger circles than those asked to generate 15. Further, those who generated three exemplars were more likely to take a newsletter providing information on how to help circle members. These studies demonstrate the impact of metacognitive experiences on moral judgment and behavior, and highlight the importance of including metacognitive variables in any comprehensive account of moral judgment. zitiert von: 10

Adopting a so-called “hearing robot” scenario we show that the dog-inspired leading behavior implemented in robots can be effective in human-robot interactions independently of the robots' embodiment.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.specom.2013.04.005 Abstract: Detecting user affect automatically during real-time conversation is the main challenge towards our greater aim of infusing social intelligence into a natural-language mixed-initiative High-Fidelity (Hi-Fi) audio control spoken dialog agent. In recent years, studies on affect detection from voice have moved on to using realistic, non-acted data, which is subtler. However, it is more challenging to perceive subtler emotions and this is demonstrated in tasks such as labeling and machine prediction. This paper attempts to address part of this challenge by considering the role of user satisfaction ratings and also conversational/dialog features in discriminating contentment and frustration, two types of emotions that are known to be prevalent within spoken human-computer interaction. However, given the laboratory constraints, users might be positively biased when rating the system, indirectly making the reliability of the satisfaction data questionable. Machine learning experiments were conducted on two datasets, users and annotators, which were then compared in order to assess the reliability of these datasets. Our results indicated that standard classifiers were significantly more successful in discriminating the abovementioned emotions and their intensities (reflected by user satisfaction ratings) from annotator data than from user data. These results corroborated that: first, satisfaction data could be used directly as an alternative target variable to model affect, and that they could be predicted exclusively by dialog features. Second, these were only true when trying to predict the abovementioned emotions using annotator’s data, suggesting that user bias does exist in a laboratory-led evaluation.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2013.00893 Abstract: We present a computational model capable of predicting—above human accuracy—the degree of trust a person has toward their novel partner by observing the trust-related nonverbal cues expressed in their social interaction. We summarize our prior work, in which we identify nonverbal cues that signal untrustworthy behavior and also demonstrate the human mind’s readiness to interpret those cues to assess the trustworthiness of a social robot. We demonstrate that domain knowledge gained from our prior work using human-subjects experiments, when incorporated into the feature engineering process, permits a computational model to outperform both human predictions and a baseline model built in naivete' of this domain knowledge. We then present the construction of hidden Markov models to incorporate temporal relationships among the trust-related nonverbal cues. By interpreting the resulting learned structure, we observe that models built to emulate different levels of trust exhibit different sequences of nonverbal cues. From this observation, we derived sequence-based temporal features that further improve the accuracy of our computational model. Our multi-step research process presented in this paper combines the strength of experimental manipulation and machine learning to not only design a computational trust model but also to further our understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal trust.

DOI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24122515 Abstract: Many Alaska Native Elders attended government-run boarding schools as children, were forbidden to speak their native language, and were forced to abandon their traditional subsistence lifestyle, yet they maintained an optimistic outlook on life and continued to age well. The Explanatory Model Interview Protocol was adapted to interview a purposive sample of Alaska Native Elders (n = 26) and grounded theory was used to develop a model of successful aging for Alaska Native Elders in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The theme of optimism was significant in the findings and was also found in each of the elements of successful aging, which were spirituality, emotional well-being, community engagement, and physical health. These four elements served as the foundation of the Model of Successful Aging. The Elders believed they were able to age successfully because they continued to be optimistic despite the challenges they faced (and are currently facing) in their communities.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1109/HRI.2013.6483598 Abstract: Pointing behaviors are used for referring to objects and people in everyday interactions, but the behaviors used for referring to objects are not necessarily polite or socially appropriate for referring to humans. In this study, we confirm that although people would point precisely to an object to indicate where it is, they were hesitant to do so when pointing to another person. We propose a model for generating socially-appropriate deictic behaviors in a robot. The model is based on balancing two factors: understandability and social appropriateness. In an experiment with a robot in a shopping mall, we found that the robot’s deictic behavior was perceived as more polite, more natural, and better overall when using our model, compared with a model considering understandability alone.

Abstract: Routines are repetitive patterns of activity within a group, action patterns that help the group to solve problems and organize its way of functioning. Routines address issues of problem solving as well as issues of internal integration, such as regulating group identity, status distribution, and relationships. This study uses an experiment with three-person groups to examine how routines evolve in the interaction of problem-solving and internal integration dynamics. In line with previous work, we find that groups do indeed develop problem-solving routines over time and use them consistently. Furthermore, group members internalize and retain routines in their individual decisions. The formation and retention of these routines is, however, affected by social comparisons. Groups that have a strong sense of group identity use their problem-solving routines more consistently. Their members also better retain the routines in their individual decisions. In contrast, we find that differentiated status within a group distorts its problem-solving routines by overweighting the influence of the high-status member. Status also interferes with the formation and retention of routines, in that groups are relatively less consistent in using them and their members show lower retention of the routine in their individual decisions. Finally, a strong relationship between two of the three members in a group (leaving the third group member out) enables the two to engage in consistent problem solving, but concomitantly, the group as a whole is less able to apply its routines consistently, and group retention of routines also suffers. It is necessary to accomplish technological analysis of studied sci-fi movies and able to distinguish about possible current technology and future direction of the artificial intelligence in the domain of Robot intelligence. The review of existing movies which are in fact influencing thinking of humans is essential since it can influence a future research direction in AI. This information is interesting for inspiration of students and research associates in theory and applications. In conclusion, we envision potential problems of social networks and impact of Internet of things facts which is becoming a reality with IPv6 protocol. The goal of the paper is also to underline the importance of such cultural phenomena as sci-fi movies for the future of humanity.

Abstract: Few theorists would challenge the idea that affect and emotion directly influence decision-making and moral judgment. There is good reason to think that they also significantly assist in decision-making and judgment, and in fact are necessary for fully effective moral cognition. However, they are not sufficient. Deliberation and more reflective thought processes likewise play a crucial role, and in fact are inseparable from affective processes. I will argue that while the dual-process account of moral judgment set forth by Craigie (2011) has great merit, it fails to appreciate fully the extent to which affective and reflective processes are not only integrated, but also mutually interdependent. Evidence from psychopathy indicates that when reflective processes are not assisted adequately by what I will call ‘affective framing’, and moral cognition is of the “cooler,” less emotionally-informed variety, what results is not effective cognitive functioning, but rather psychopathology. My proposed account of affective framing aims to make sense of the way in which affect plays a strictly necessary and integral role not just in intuitive moral responses, but also in reflective moral judgments, so that moral cognition is accomplished by the joint operation of affective processes and reflective reasoning processes.

The goal of the moral conflict development theory is to make specific contributions to teachers' practice by: (a) providing a theoretical and practical framework concerning children's moral development based on the unfolding of certain moral emotions such as guilt and shame and (b) assisting teachers to become aware of the fact that they do make a difference in children's moral development that is dependent on how they intervene in moral mishaps and antisocial behavior that arise among children during school time. Abstract: Thema des Beitrags ist der Einsatz sozialer Roboter (Roboter, die u. a. durch Sprache, Mimik oder Gestik kommunizieren können) in der Sprachtherapie. Obwohl neue Technologien im Gesundheitsbereich immer stärker erforscht werden, liegen insbesondere im Bereich der sozial assistiven Roboter in der Sprachtherapie nur wenige Erkenntnisse vor. Die vorliegende Studie ist ein erster Schritt, die Einstellungen von SprachtherapeutInnen hinsichtlich eines Einsatzes sozialer Roboter in der Sprachtherapie zu untersuchen. Dazu wurden 131 SprachtherapeutInnen aus ganz Deutschland via Internet befragt. Die Studie ergab, dass die befragten SprachtherapeutInnen bislang wenig zu diesem Thema wissen. Die selbstbeurteilte Offenheit gegenüber neuen Technologien und Robotern hat dabei einen Einfluss auf die Bereitschaft, einen sozialen Roboter in der Therapie einzusetzen. Weiterhin wurden notwendige Charakteristika, Funktionen und Einsatzmöglichkeiten identifiziert. Es wird ein Überblick über das Feld der sozialen Robotik im sprachtherapeutischen Kontext gegeben und versucht, zu weiterer Forschung hinsichtlich der Möglichkeiten und Grenzen eines Einsatzes sozialer Roboter in der Therapie anzuregen.

We provide a phenomenology-inspired design perspective on emotional and social robotics in elder care pivoting on the uniqueness and respect for older people's perceptual-motor, cognitive, emotional, and social skills. Our approach aims at achieving an empathic relationship between the older person and the system by providing continuous, expressive opportunities to allow interaction and meaning to emerge. We illustrate our research-through-design approach with several scenarios and conclude this paper reporting the interview of an older person who experimented with early prototypes of the robotic system.

Abstract: Humanoids have increasingly become the focus of attention in robotics research in recent years, especially in service and personal assistance robotics. This paper presents the application developed for humanoid robots in the therapy of dementia patients as a cognitive stimulation tool. The behaviour of the robot during the therapy sessions is visually programmed in a session script that allows music to play, physical movements (dancing, exercises, etc.), speech synthesis and interaction with the human monitor. The application includes the control software on board the robot and some tools like the visual script generator or a monitor to supervise the robot behaviour during the sessions. The robot application's impact on the patient's health has been studied. Experiments with real patients have been performed in collaboration with a centre of research in neurodegenerative diseases. Initial results show a slight or mild improvement in neuropsychiatric symptoms over other traditional therapy methods.
