    Abstract: The long term evaluation of the Sacarino robot is presented in this paper. The study is aimed to improve the robot‘s capabilities as a bellboy in a hotel; walking alongside the guests, providing information about the city and the hotel and providing hotel-related services. The paper establishes a three-stage assessment methodology based on the continuous measurement of a set of metrics regarding navigation and interaction with guests. Sacarino has been automatically collecting information in a real hotel environment for long periods of time. The acquired information has been analyzed and used to improve the robot’s operation in the hotel through successive refinements. Some interesting considerations and useful hints for the researchers of service robots have been extracted from the analysis of the results.     Abstract: This study investigates the influence of a robot’s speech rate. In human communication, slow speech is considered boring, speech at normal speed is perceived as credible, and fast speech is perceived as competent. To seek the appropriate speech rate for robots, we test whether these tendencies are replicated in human-robot interaction by conducting an experiment with four rates of speech: fast, normal, moderately slow, and slow. Our experimental results reveal a rather surprising trend. Participants prefer normal and moderately slow speech to fast speech. A robot that provides normal or moderately slow speech is perceived as competent. We further study how context affects this perception. In a situation where the robot and participants talk while walking, we found that slow speech was the most comprehensible. In addition, slow speech is subjectively perceived as good as moderately slow and normal speech. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)

    Abstract: We have investigated actual and perceived human performance associated with a simple task involving walking and applied the developed knowledge to a human-robot interaction. Based on experiments involving walking at a ’purposeful and comfortable’ pace, parameters were determined for a trapezoidal model of walking: starting from standing still, accelerating to a constant pace, walking at a constant pace, and decelerating to a stop. We also collected data on humans’ evaluation of the accomplishment of a simple task involving walking: determining the transitions from having taken too short a period of time to an appropriate time and from having taken an appropriate time to having taken too long. People were found to be accurate in estimating the task duration for short tasks, but to underestimate the duration of longer tasks. This information was applied to a human-robot interaction involving a human leaving for a ’moment’ and the robot knows how long the task should take and how time is evaluated by a human.
