    Abstract: In 1974 at the Institute od Psychology of the "Freie Universität" (West Berlin), a group was founded which is engaged in different areas of trade-union-oriented research and the application of scientific approaches. In 1978 we formed the association "Arbeit, Bildung und Forschung (ABF) e.V." together with leading members of the large unions of the Federal Republic of Germany. Besides reasearch on stress at work, and the enlargement and use of scientific knowledge by shift workers, the main field of this group is the development and application of programmes for the training of social competence of union members.
